INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
at Northeastern
- Series record: Elon trails, 9-13
- The Phoenix and Huskies (5-11, 1-4) clashed just two weeks ago on Dec. 29 when Elon earned a 103-91 victory at the Schar Center to open CAA play. Elon's 103 points scored were the program's most in a CAA contest decided in regulation and came on 62.1% shooting from the floor (36 of 58), the fourth-highest single-game field-goal percentage in program history.
- Northeastern is 1-3 since the Dec. 29 contest, losing three in a row to Campbell, UNCW and Towson by an average of 11.0 points.
- Elon is 4-7 in road games played at Northeastern, including a 1-1 mark under head coach Billy Taylor. The Phoenix lost its most recent game in Boston, 61-58, on Feb. 22, 2024.
- All 22 previous games played between Elon and Northeastern have been as CAA foes dating back to the 2014-15 season.
- Husky senior guard LA Pratt played his first two collegiate seasons at Elon (2022-24) before transferring to Northeastern. A 2025 All-CAA Preseason Second Team selection, Pratt is out for the season with a broken foot.
Â
at Hofstra
- Series record: Elon trails, 5-14
- Hofstra (13-4, 4-0) is one of three remaining undefeated teams in CAA play, with road wins at Drexel and Towson sandwiched between home victories over Campbell and Monmouth.
- The Pride plays at Stony Brook on Thursday before shifting its focus to the Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.
- Elon has lost three straight to Hofstra since Jan. 26, 2023. The Phoenix's last win in the series came on the road on Feb. 24, 2022.
- Hofstra earned two wins against ACC foes in a three-game span in December, topping Pittsburgh and Syracuse on the road.
- The Pride is led by junior guard Cruz Davis, who averages 21.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 37.8 minutes played per game.

STARTING FIVE
1. Something To Prove
Picked 12th out of 13 teams in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll, Elon has opened conference play with both motivation and momentum. The Phoenix enters the third week of its league slate at 3-1 after picking up two wins last week, never trailing in a 69-64 victory at North Carolina A&T before rallying with a game-ending 10-0 run to stun Campbell, 83-82, two days later. Elon stands as one of just four conference teams with one loss or fewer and will look to continue building on its strong start as it seeks its first winning CAA record since the 2016-17 season.
Â
2. Road Dubs
The Phoenix gears up for its first true road trip of CAA play with a 4-3 mark away from home this season and stands as one of only three league teams with four or more road wins, joining UNCW (6-1) and Hofstra (6-4). In addition to a 69-64 win at North Carolina A&T last Thursday, Elon collected three nonconference road victories earlier in the year, edging UNCG 92-90 in overtime on Nov. 8 before rolling past Appalachian State, 88-53, in Boone on Nov. 24 and Wofford, 73-52, in Spartanburg on Dec. 6. Elon's success away from home represents a significant turnaround for the program, which dropped 24 straight nonconference road games from Dec. 22, 2018 to Nov. 15, 2024 and totaled just 12 road wins across the previous three seasons.
Â
3. Well-Oiled Machine
Elon's offense has produced points in a variety of ways this season, making the Phoenix a difficult matchup on any night in CAA play. Elon leads the conference and ranks 45th nationally in scoring offense at 85.4 points per game – a figure that eclipses any previous Division I season average for the program (best: 75.9 PPG since 1999) – and has topped 90 points five times, including a season-high 103 in its CAA opener against Northeastern on Dec. 29.
Â
The Phoenix has been efficient inside, shooting 57.4% on 2-point field goals while averaging a league-best 39.4 points in the paint, highlighted by a 50-point paint effort in last Saturday's comeback win over Campbell. Elon has also been dangerous from the perimeter, leading the CAA with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game while shooting 35.6% from beyond the arc.
Â
4. Leading Roles
At the center of Elon's high-powered offense is a pair of graduate forwards in
Chandler Cuthrell and
Kacper Klaczek. Cuthrell has emerged as one of the nation's most productive scorers, averaging 21.3 points per game to rank 16th nationally while recording 13 20-point performances in 17 contests. Named to the early-season Lou Henson Award Watch List – presented annually to the nation's top mid-major player – Cuthrell is one of just six Division I players averaging at least 21.0 points (21.3) and 6.0 rebounds (6.6) per game.
Â
Klaczek has been the Phoenix's most versatile weapon, a trait he showcased in Elon's 103-91 win over Northeastern in the CAA opener on Dec. 29. He filled the stat sheet with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting, 12 rebounds and five assists, becoming one of only four Division I players this season to post that stat line or better in a game. The Chorzow, Poland, native leads Elon in efficiency, shooting 55.5% from the floor and 45.5% from 3-point range, while averaging 12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists through four CAA games.
Â
5. Floor General
Elon has found both stability and poise at the point guard position in graduate
Ja'Juan Carr, a former UNCW Seahawk who went on to win 74 games over three seasons (2022–25) at UNC Pembroke. Carr leads the CAA and ranks 24th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.43) this season, then elevated that efficiency in conference play with an 8.3 ratio, totaling 25 assists against just three turnovers. More than a distributor, Carr showcased his scoring ability with a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting to help rally Elon past Campbell last Saturday.

UP NEXT
Elon has another split week ahead as it hosts Towson on Thursday, Jan. 22, before playing at College of Charleston on Saturday, Jan. 24.
