INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
vs. William & Mary
  • Series record: Elon trails, 9-22
  • The Phoenix and Tribe will go head-to-head twice over the upcoming three weeks, starting with Thursday's matchup at Schar Center. Elon travels to Williamsburg, Virginia, for a road contest on Saturday, Feb. 14.
  • William & Mary (83.6 points per game) and Elon (83.2) represent the CAA's top two scoring offenses. The two squads are 1-2 in the CAA in five different offensive categories this season, including assist/turnover ratio, assists per game, effective field-goal percentage, field-goal percentage and scoring offense.
  • The Tribe is 0-3 on the road in league play, falling at Charleston, Monmouth and Drexel between Jan. 5-10.
  • Elon is 2-5 vs. William & Mary under head coach Billy Taylor with both wins coming at home on Feb. 29, 2024, and Feb. 11, 2023.
  • The Tribe swept the 2024-25 season series over the Phoenix with a 78-65 win in Williamsburg and a 79-70 win in Elon.

vs. Stony Brook
  • Series record: Elon trails, 1-4
  • The teams have met five times on the hardwood, including three matchups since Stony Brook joined the CAA in 2022.
  • Elon's lone win against the Seawolves was a 69-55 contest in Stony Brook, New York, on Feb. 2, 2023.
  • Stony Brook plays at Campbell on Thursday night before shifting focus to the Phoenix.
  • Stony Brook enters the week on a three-game win streak, topping Hofstra and Charleston – the latter being a two-overtime thriller – at home before going on the road to beat Northeastern last Thursday. The Seawolves are just 2-6 away from home this season.

STARTING FIVE
1. Something To Prove
Picked 12th in the CAA preseason coaches' poll, Elon has outperformed expectations early, sitting in a six-way tie for fourth place at 4-4 midway through conference play. Despite back-to-back losses last week to Towson (72-59) and College of Charleston (80-70) – its first losing streak since Nov. 29-Dec. 3 – the Phoenix remains in the CAA hunt with 10 regular-season games left. Elon is pursuing its first winning CAA record since 2016-17.

2. Well-Oiled Machine
Elon's offense is producing points in a variety of ways this season, making the Phoenix a difficult matchup on any night in CAA play. Elon ranks second in the conference – trailing only William & Mary – and ranks 61st nationally in scoring offense at 83.2 points per game, a figure that eclipses any previous Division I season average for the program (best: 75.9 PPG in 2015-16). The Phoenix has topped 90 points five times, including a season-high 103 in its conference opener against Northeastern on Dec. 29. Elon has pounded the paint, averaging 37.9 points per game in the paint while shooting 56.8% on 2-point field goals. The Phoenix has also been dangerous from the perimeter, ranking third in the CAA with 9.5 made 3-pointers per game while shooting 35.4% from beyond the arc.

3. Cookin' With Cokley
The Phoenix has found a sixth starter in sophomore guard Bryson Cokley, who averaged 24.5 minutes per game off the bench over the first 20 contests before earning his first career start last Saturday at Charleston in place of injured Kacper Klaczek. Cokley (12.0 PPG this season) has been on a tear of late, averaging 17.3 points on 57.5% shooting (23-of-40) from the floor and 65% (13-of-20) from three over the past four games. The Whiteville native has scored in double figures 15 times this season, highlighted by a career-high 26 points — along with seven rebounds and seven assists — in a road win at Northeastern two weeks ago.

4. Leading Role
At the center of Elon's high-powered offense is graduate forward Chandler Cuthrell, who has emerged as one of the nation's most productive scorers with 21.0 points per game (14th nationally). Cuthrell arrived at Elon this past offseason with a career scoring average of 6.1 PPG and has since exploded onto the scene, scoring 20-plus points in 15 of the Phoenix's 21 games so far. The 6-foot-8 forward is second in the CAA in field-goal percentage (51.9%) but has made a living at the free throw line, ranking sixth nationally with 164 attempts (69.5% shooter at the line). Named to the early-season Lou Henson Award Watch List, Cuthrell is one of just five Division I players averaging at least 21.0 points (21.0) and 6.0 rebounds (6.5) per game.

5. Floor General
Elon has found both stability and poise at the point guard position in graduate Ja'Juan Carr, a former UNCW Seahawk who helped UNC Pembroke win 74 games over three seasons (2022-25). Carr leads the CAA and ranks 21th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.41) this season and has been even more efficient in conference play with a 5.0 ratio (45 assists, nine turnovers). More than a distributor, Carr has scored double figures three times in league action, highlighted by a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting to help rally Elon past Campbell on Jan. 10.

UP NEXT
Elon plays at Hampton on Thursday, Feb. 5. Tipoff against the Pirates is at 7 p.m. ET at the Hampton Convocation Center.
