Phoenix Continues Homestand

Elon Welcomes South Carolina State

ELON – The No. 58 Elon women's tennis team (6-2) looks to extend its three-match winning streak Sunday against South Carolina State (0-4). The contest at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center has been moved up to begin at 10 a.m. after originally being slated for an afternoon start.

The Matchup
  • Elon leads the head-to-head against the Bulldogs, 5-2.
  • The Phoenix edged out South Carolina State in a 4-3 decision last March at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Bulldogs took the doubles point but Elon rallied in singles with Heidi Bulger clinching a Phoenix victory with a three-set victory at the No. 4 spot.
  • South Carolina State has won just one of the last six matches in the head-to-head, coming in 2024 when the Bulldogs upended the Phoenix, 4-2.
  • All seven of the meetings in the series have come at Elon.
  • This will be the third straight season and Elon and South Carolina State will meet.
 
About The Phoenix
  • Simone Bergeron is back for her junior season after a breakout campaign last spring that saw her take home CAA Women's Tennis Player of the Year. Bergeron went 12-9 playing No. 1 singles while also notching a 20-4 mark in doubles to earned First Team All-CAA recognition in both doubles and singles.  
  • Bergeron's primary doubles partner last season was Mariana Reding, who also earned First Team All-CAA honors in doubles. Reding, also a junior, went 16-6 playing Nos. 2-4 singles and won 18 doubles contests alongside Bergeron last spring.  
  • Senior Helen Sarikulaya also received All-CAA recognition in both singles (Third Team) and doubles (Second Team) last spring. 
  • Lisa Kranec earned All-CAA Second Team recognition in doubles after tallying 12 wins alongside Sarikulaya. She posted 17 singles victories in her freshman campaign, anchoring the bottom half of Elon's lineup.  
  • Also back for the Phoenix is senior Madison Cordisco, who finished second on the team last season with 17 singles triumphs. She went 14-4 at the No. 5 position.  
  • Elon welcomes three newcomers this season – Cornelia KackAlexis Nyborg and Nathalie Marinovitch 
  • Kack joined the Phoenix after earning All-CAA Third Team honors in doubles last season as a freshman at Delaware. Nyborg came to Elon following two successful seasons at UNC Asheville, where she earned All-Big South First Team honors in singles in 2025. Marinovitch, a native of Cochabamba, Bolivia, is Elon's lone freshman.  
  • Elon won its first ever CAA championship last spring, winning the CAA Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with a victory over three-time defending champion William & Mary in the final. 
  • The Phoenix earned the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and faced No. 10 Tennessee in the opening round. Elon finished the season with a 19-6 overall record, which included a 15-2 mark at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. 
  • Elon is led by reigning CAA Coach of the Year Elizabeth Anderson, who is in her 22nd season leading the Phoenix. She is joined by first-year assistant coach Allie Gretkowski, who played college tennis at South Carolina and Louisville.  
 
Last Time Out
  • Elon polished off a three-win week on March 1 with a 4-0 victory over Davidson at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • The Phoenix won the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.
  • Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec delivered Elon's first win of the day on Court 3 before Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding clinched the opening point with a victory on Court 1.
  • Bergeron and Kack made it 3-0 for the Phoenix with straight-set wins at the top two singles spots. Reding then clinched the match for Elon with a victory on Court 3 after coming through an opening-set tiebreak.
 
How Sweep It Is
  • The Phoenix went 3-0 last week, defeating North Carolina A&T, Wofford and Davidson at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • Elon swept all three matches, winning by a combined score of 15-0. The Phoenix went 19-0 in completed matches in the three victories, winning 12 singles and seven doubles contests.
  • Reding and Bergeron finished with a perfect 6-0 mark across doubles and singles, winning three doubles matches together at the No. 1 spot to go along with a trio of singles wins. Kack enjoyed a 5-0 week, with Kranec posting a 4-0 mark.
  • The Phoenix lost just six singles sets in the three victories, going 29-6 in total sets.
 
Phoenix Rising The Rankings
  • Elon entered the ITA singles rankings on Tuesday, checking in at No. 58.
  • The ranking is Elon's highest ever as a Division I program, beating the previous best mark of No. 59 from the poll on March 5, 2013.
  • This is Elon's first time appearing in the ITA team rankings since Jan. 6, 2015, when the Phoenix held the 75th and final spot in the standings.
  • Elon is the only CAA team in this week's edition of the rankings and is the first team from the conference to be ranked this season.
  • The Phoenix has a ranked victory over No. 69 Liberty. Elon's 5-2 win against the Flames on Feb. 13 is the only ranked win by a CAA team this spring.
 
Mar-velous
  • Following a perfect 6-0 week across doubles and singles last week, Reding was named CAA Player of the Week on Tuesday.
  • Reding's three singles victories came at the No. 3 spot, beginning with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win against Juana Gomez Weiss of North Carolina A&T. She then defeated Wofford's Katie Godfree, 7-5, 6-2, before beating Ellie Hammond of Davidson, 7-6 (2), 6-3. The victory against the Wildcats clinched a 4-0 sweep for Elon. 
  • In doubles, Reding paired up with Bergeron for a trio of victories at the No. 1 spot, helping the Phoenix secure the doubles point in all three matches. They won 6-4 against Gomez Weiss and Flavia Villegas of North Carolina A&T before blanking Wofford's tandem of Grace Agster and Ella Suk, 6-0. Elon's top duo then clinched the doubles point against Davidson with a 6-3 triumph against Bryson Langford and Savanna Kollock.
  • Reding did not drop a set in any of her six wins, going a perfect 9-0 in doubles and singles frames. The junior improved to 3-0 in singles tiebreaks this season with her first-set breaker victories against North Carolina A&T and Davidson.  
  • Reding leads the Phoenix with six singles victories this spring, all of which have come at the No. 3 position. The six wins have all been in straight sets.
  • The CAA Player of the Week nod was the second of Reding's career, as she previously received the honor on Jan. 28, 2025. 
 
Kack Attack
  • Kack's Elon career is off to a prolific start, as the sophomore is tied with Reding for the team lead in total wins this spring (11).
  • Kack earned CAA Co-Player of the Week honors on Feb. 17 after a dominant stretch in which she posted multiple singles and doubles wins for the Phoenix.
  • Prior to her matchup against No. 3 North Carolina on Feb. 17, Kack had recorded singles and doubles victories in three straight matches, dropping just eight total games across those singles wins and claiming three 6-0 sets during the run.
  • Her streak was snapped against the Tar Heels, but she continued her strong play by taking a set off Oby Kajuru, the No. 7-ranked player in the ITA standings, pushing the nationally ranked Tar Heel to three sets at the No. 2 singles position.
  • Kack has also formed one of Elon's most reliable doubles pairings alongside Kranec, with the duo leading the team in doubles wins this spring (6).
  • All five of Kack's singles wins have come at the No. 2 position, with four coming in straight sets.
  • In Elon's three victories last week, Kack went 3-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles. She was two games away from winning her singles match against Wofford when it was halted.
 
Super Simone
  • Bergeron had a prolific sophomore campaign, becoming the first Elon player to win both CAA Player of the Year and CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
  • She picked up 20 doubles victories in her sophomore campaign, tied for the third most in a season by an Elon player.
  • All 12 of Bergeron's singles victories last spring came at the No. 1 position, which included the CAA title clinching win against William & Mary.
  • Bergeron has compiled 60 dual wins across singles and doubles in her first three campaigns with the Phoenix. She won at least 12 matches in both singles and doubles in each of her first two seasons.
  • This fall, Bergeron was selected as the CAA's singles representative at ITA Conference Masters. She was the first Elon player to compete at the event.
  • Bergeron went 6-0 last week in Elon's three victories, pairing with Reding for three wins at the No. 1 doubles spot to go along with a trio of triumphs at the top singles position.
  • Bergeron continued her clutch run in tiebreaks, winning a first-set breaker in her victory against Wofford. The junior has now won 7-of-9 career dual singles tiebreaks, a winning percentage just under 80%.
  • Bergeron has found her form in singles, entering Sunday's match having won six consecutive sets. She has lost more than two games in just one of those six winning frames.
 
Connect Four
  • Three Phoenix are tied for third on the team with four singles victories – Bergeron, Kranec and Nyborg.
  • Kranec has been efficient in her singles wins, with all four coming in straight sets at the No. 4 spot. Kranec is 2-0 in singles tiebreaks, with one of the triumphs coming in the opening set against No. 3 North Carolina's Thea Rabman, who was No. 90 in the ITA singles rankings.
  • In her last two singles victories against George Washington and North Carolina A&T, Kranec has dropped just six games, losing no more than two games in any of the four sets.
  • Kranec's match against Davidson was halted in the third set. The sophomore lost the opening frame but stormed back to win the second, 6-0, and led by a break at 3-1 in the third when the match was calle.d
  • Nyborg has been a strong presence at the No. 5 singles spot, winning four of her last five completed matches. The junior also won her first set at No. 3 North Carolina and forced opponent Claire Hill into a final frame.
  • In Elon's matches against Wofford and Davidson over the weekend, Nyborg was within reach of two singles victories. She led Wofford's Ella Suk, 5-3, in the second set when that match was halted and was 4-2 up on Davidson's Keri Rothenberg when Elon clinched the contest.
 
 
Nat Debuts
 
  • Marinovitch made her dual debut for the Phoenix on Feb. 25 against North Carolina A&T, playing the No. 6 singles spots.
  • The freshman came through a tight match against the Aggies, defeating Flavia Villegas for her first career dual victory.
  • Marinovitch was back in the lineup on Feb. 28 against Wofford, again at the No. 6 position. She clinched the match for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Marie Henriksen.
  • Marinovitch has won all four of her dual singles sets, all of which have gone 10-plus games.
 
 
Career Milestones
 
  • Several Phoenix are moving up Elon's all-time ranks in career doubles wins.
  • With her five victories this spring, Bergeron is up to 38 career wins, tied with Paige Kensrue for the 14th most in program history. The junior needs just two more wins to become the 14th Phoenix to reach 40 career dual doubles victories.
  • Reding is also into the top 15 in career doubles wins with the Phoenix with 36 victories.
  • Cordisco is not far off the pace of Bergeron and Reding, as the senior is up to 34 career doubles victories.  
 
 
Doubles Success
  • Elon has won the doubles point in all six of its victories this season.
  • The Phoenix has lost just one match in those six winning doubles points. Elon has a 14-1 record in doubles in its six victories this season.
  • Of the five Elon doubles pairs to play together this spring, four have delivered victories. Cordisco and Nyborg paired up for the first time last week against the Aggies and picked up a tiebreak win.
  • Kack and Kranec lead the Phoenix with six wins at the No. 3 spot. Bergeron and Reding are close behind with five victories at the top spot in the lineup. Both pairings have won three straight outings.
  • Elon is yet to lose a doubles match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season, with a 9-0 record in completed home doubles contests.
  • Including matches from the fall season, Elon is 45-16 in completed doubles matches in the 2025-26 campaign.
  • Elon utilized the same doubles lineup in all three of its victories last week.
 
Home Cooking
  • Sunday's contest will be the fourth in a five-match homestand for Elon.
  • The Phoenix enters the match against the Bulldogs unbeaten at home this season, winning all six contests, including four at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • Since 2020, Elon has compiled a dominant 78-10 record on its home courts. The Phoenix has not dropped more than two home matches in a single season during that span.
  • Last year marked Elon's strongest home performance of the stretch, finishing 15-2 for an .882 winning percentage.
  • Elon has lost just two points in four matches at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season, both coming against Liberty.
  • In addition to its perfect 9-0 doubles mark at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this spring, the Phoenix is 15-2 in completed singles contests at its home facility.
 
The Anderson Era
  • Head coach Elizabeth Anderson is in her 22nd season leading the maroon and gold. 
  • Anderson has turned Elon into a consistent winner. Under her guidance, the Phoenix has posted 19 consecutive winning seasons, all of which have included double-digit victories. 
  • Since joining the CAA in the 2014-15 season, Elon has won at least one match in all 10 of its CAA Tournament appearances. Anderson led the program to the CAA championship match for the first time in 2022 and its first CAA title in 2025 to earn an NCAA Tournament bid.
  • In Elon's final season in the Southern Conference, Anderson led the maroon and gold to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 2013. The Phoenix won its first Southern Conference championship that season to qualify. 
  • Since taking over as head coach in 2005, Anderson has tallied 314 victories at Elon. Her winning percentage is 62% in 504 career matches. 
  • Anderson was named CAA Coach of the Year in 2025, the second time in her career she earned the honor.
  • Elon has also been a strong performer in the classroom during Anderson's tenure. The program has earned All-ITA Academic Team honors in 20 consecutive seasons.
 
Scouting South Carolina State
  • The Bulldogs enter Sunday's match with an 0-4 record this season. They are yet to win a point with shutout losses at the hands of Charlotte, UNC Asheville, Georgia Southern and South Carolina.
  • The Bulldogs have not played since losing to South Carolina, 5-0, on Feb. 14. The match against the Gamecocks was South Carolina State's first on the road this season.
  • South Carolina State is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance a season ago. The reigning MEAC champions have won the conference in six consecutive seasons.
  • The Bulldogs are led by head coach Hardeep Judge.
