Phoenix Goes For Fifth Straight Win

Elon Hosts South Alabama To Close Homestand

ELON – The No. 58 Elon women's tennis team (7-2) looks to complete a perfect five-match homestand Wednesday against South Alabama (8-0). The contest at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center will begin at 2 p.m.

The Matchup
  • Wednesday will be the first ever meeting between the Phoenix and Jaguars.
  • The match will be Elon's first of two against Sun Belt opponents this spring, with the Phoenix also slated to face Old Dominion on April 4.
 
About The Phoenix
  • Simone Bergeron is back for her junior season after a breakout campaign last spring that saw her take home CAA Women's Tennis Player of the Year. Bergeron went 12-9 playing No. 1 singles while also notching a 20-4 mark in doubles to earned First Team All-CAA recognition in both doubles and singles.  
  • Bergeron's primary doubles partner last season was Mariana Reding, who also earned First Team All-CAA honors in doubles. Reding, also a junior, went 16-6 playing Nos. 2-4 singles and won 18 doubles contests alongside Bergeron last spring. 
  • Senior Helen Sarikulaya also received All-CAA recognition in both singles (Third Team) and doubles (Second Team) last spring. 
  • Lisa Kranec earned All-CAA Second Team recognition in doubles after tallying 12 wins alongside Sarikulaya. She posted 17 singles victories in her freshman campaign, anchoring the bottom half of Elon's lineup.  
  • Also back for the Phoenix is senior Madison Cordisco, who finished second on the team last season with 17 singles triumphs. She went 14-4 at the No. 5 position.  
  • Elon welcomes three newcomers this season – Cornelia Kack, Alexis Nyborg and Nathalie Marinovitch.  
  • Kack joined the Phoenix after earning All-CAA Third Team honors in doubles last season as a freshman at Delaware. Nyborg came to Elon following two successful seasons at UNC Asheville, where she earned All-Big South First Team honors in singles in 2025. Marinovitch, a native of Cochabamba, Bolivia, is Elon's lone freshman.  
  • Elon won its first ever CAA championship last spring, winning the CAA Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with a victory over three-time defending champion William & Mary in the final. 
  • The Phoenix earned the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and faced No. 10 Tennessee in the opening round. Elon finished the season with a 19-6 overall record, which included a 15-2 mark at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. 
  • Elon is led by reigning CAA Coach of the Year Elizabeth Anderson, who is in her 22nd season leading the Phoenix. She is joined by first-year assistant coach Allie Gretkowski, who played college tennis at South Carolina and Louisville.  
 
Last Time Out
  • Elon rolled to a 6-0 win against South Carolina State on Sunday for its fourth straight sweep at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • The Phoenix won the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. On Court 1, Bergeron and Reding won 6-2 before Cordisco and Nyborg secured a 6-1 victory on Court 2.
  • Elon won five singles matches in straight sets, with victories at the Nos. 1-5 spots.
  • Cordisco did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot, while Kack dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 result on Court 2.
  • Bergeron notched the winning point for the Phoenix at the top singles position with a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
  • Reding and Nyborg added straight-set triumphs for the Phoenix.
 
How Sweep It Is
  • The Phoenix is 4-0 on its current homestand with wins over North Carolina A&T, Wofford, Davidson and South Carolina State at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • Elon swept all four matches, winning by a combined score of 21-0. The Phoenix has gone 26-0 in completed matches in the four victories, winning 17 singles and nine doubles contests.
  • The four straight sweeps are the most for the Phoenix since blanking four consecutive opponents during the 2014 season.
  • Reding and Bergeron are a perfect 8-0 across doubles and singles in the four sweeps, winning four doubles matches together at the No. 1 spot to go along with a quartet of singles wins. Neither has lost a singles set in the four wins.
  • Kack (5), Nyborg (4), Cordisco (3), Kranec (3) and Marinovitch (2) have also tallied multiple victories across singles and doubles during the sweep streak.
  • The Phoenix has lost just seven singles sets in the four team victories, going 40-7 in total sets.
 
Phoenix Rising In The Rankings
  • Elon entered the ITA singles rankings last week checking in at No. 58.
  • The ranking is Elon's highest ever as a Division I program, beating the previous best mark of No. 59 from the poll on March 5, 2013.
  • This is Elon's first time appearing in the ITA team rankings since Jan. 6, 2015, when the Phoenix held the 75th and final spot in the standings.
  • Elon was the only CAA team in last week's edition of the rankings and is the first team from the conference to be ranked this season.
  • The Phoenix has a ranked victory over No. 69 Liberty. Elon's 5-2 win against the Flames on Feb. 13 is the only ranked win by a CAA team this spring.
 
Mar-velous
  • Reding leads the Phoenix with 13 victories this spring across singles and doubles.
  • The junior is on a four-match winning streak in both singles and doubles, with all four doubles triumphs coming alongside Bergeron.
  • Reding's seven singles victories are the most on the Phoenix, with all seven coming at the No. 3 spot.  
  • Reding has won seven of her last eight singles matches and 14 of her last 16 singles sets, with the only blemishes coming against No. 3 North Carolina.
  • Reding was named CAA Player of the Week on March 3 after going 6-0 overall in Elon's sweeps against North Carolina A&T, Wofford and Davidson.
  • The CAA Player of the Week nod was the second of Reding's career, as she previously received the honor on Jan. 28, 2025. 
 
Kack Attack
  • Kack's Elon career is off to a prolific start, as the sophomore is second on the Phoenix in total wins this spring (12).
  • Kack earned CAA Co-Player of the Week honors on Feb. 17 after a dominant stretch in which she posted multiple singles and doubles wins for the Phoenix.
  • Against No. 3 North Carolina on Feb. 17, Kack took a set off Oby Kajuru, the No. 7-ranked player in the ITA standings, pushing the nationally ranked Tar Heel to three sets at the No. 2 singles position.
  • Kack has also formed one of Elon's most reliable doubles pairings alongside Kranec, with the duo tied for the team lead in doubles wins this spring (6).
  • All six of Kack's singles wins have come at the No. 2 position, with five coming in straight sets. She has been ruthless in singles, winning six sets by either a 6-1 or 6-0 scoreline, the most on the team.
  • Kack has won three straight completed matches in both doubles and singles.
 
Super Simone
  • Bergeron had a prolific sophomore campaign, becoming the first Elon player to win both CAA Player of the Year and CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
  • She picked up 20 doubles victories in her sophomore campaign, tied for the third most in a season by an Elon player.
  • All 12 of Bergeron's singles victories last spring came at the No. 1 position, which included the CAA title clinching win against William & Mary.
  • Bergeron has compiled 68 dual wins across singles and doubles in her first three campaigns with the Phoenix. She won at least 12 matches in both singles and doubles in each of her first two seasons.
  • This fall, Bergeron was selected as the CAA's singles representative at ITA Conference Masters. She was the first Elon player to compete at the event.
  • Bergeron has won four straight matches at both No. 1 doubles and singles during Elon's homestand. She helped Elon clinch 4-0 victories against both Wofford and Davidson with efficient singles performances.
  • The junior's last four singles victories have all come in straight sets, having lost more than two games in just one of those eight winning frames.
  • Bergeron has continued her clutch run in tiebreaks during Elon's homestand, winning a first-set breaker in her victory against Wofford on Feb. 28. The junior has now won 7-of-9 career dual singles tiebreaks, a winning percentage just under 80%.
  • Alongside Reding, Bergeron has helped the Phoenix win its last four doubles points.
 
Winning Contributions
  • Elon has received contributions throughout its lineup during its winning streak, with seven Phoenix tallying multiple victories.
  • Nyborg joined Elon's doubles lineup to open the homestand, pairing with Cordisco for a pair of victories to go along with two singles wins.
  • Nyborg is 5-2 in singles this spring, with four of the five victories coming in straight sets. She also took a set off North Carolina's Claire Hill on Feb. 17.
  • Cordisco is coming off a double-bagel victory against South Carolina State, as the senior did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Iriela Rajaobelina. It was her fourth career dual win by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
  • Cordisco is 4-1 playing No. 2 doubles this spring and has added three singles victories.
  • Kranec has also been a steady presence in Elon's singles and doubles lineups.
  • The sophomore has joined Kack for six doubles victories this spring, tied for the most on the Phoenix. The duo has anchored the No. 3 spot, with all six victories coming at that position.
  • Kranec is 4-2 in singles this spring, with all four wins coming in straight sets and both losses coming against ranked teams. She took her first set in a tiebreak against Thea Rabman of No. 3 North Carolina on Feb. 17.
 
Nat Debuts
  • Marinovitch made her dual debut for the Phoenix on Feb. 25 against North Carolina A&T, playing the No. 6 singles spot.
  • The freshman came through a tight match against the Aggies, defeating Flavia Villegas for her first career dual victory.
  • Marinovitch was back in the lineup on Feb. 28 against Wofford, again at the No. 6 position. She clinched the match for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Marie Henriksen.
  • Against South Carolina State over the weekend, Marinovitch made her dual doubles debut, partnering Kack at the No. 3 spot. The duo led 4-3 when the match was halted.
 
Career Milestones
  • Several Phoenix are moving up Elon's all-time ranks in career doubles wins.
  • With her six doubles victories this spring, Bergeron is up to 39 career wins, the 14th most in program history. The junior needs just one more win to become the 14th Phoenix to reach 40 career dual doubles victories.
  • Reding is not far behind her doubles partner, as she recently cracked the top 15 in career doubles wins with the Phoenix with 37 victories.
  • Cordisco is also making a move up the rankings, as the senior is up to 35 career doubles victories.  
 
Doubles Success
  • Elon has won the doubles point in all seven of its victories this season.
  • The Phoenix has lost just one match in those seven winning doubles points. Elon has a 16-1 record in doubles in its seven victories this season.
  • Of the six Elon doubles pairs to play together this spring, four have delivered victories.
  • Bergeron and Reding have won four straight matches together and are tied for the team lead with six victories this spring. During their winning streak, they have dropped just seven of their 31 games played (24-7).
  • Kack and Kranec are tied with for the team lead six wins at the No. 3 spot. The duo has won three straight outings and six of their last seven.
  • Elon is yet to lose a doubles match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season, with a 11-0 record in completed home doubles contests.
  • Including matches from the fall season, Elon is 47-16 in completed doubles matches in the 2025-26 campaign.
  • Elon has utilized five different doubles lineups this spring, with the fifth debuting against South Carolina State on Sunday.
 
Home Cooking
  • Wednesday's contest will conclude a season-long five-match homestand for Elon.
  • The Phoenix enters the match against the Jaguars unbeaten at home this season, winning all seven contests, including five at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
  • Since 2020, Elon has compiled a dominant 79-10 record on its home courts. The Phoenix has not dropped more than two home matches in a single season during that span.
  • Last year marked Elon's strongest home performance of the stretch, finishing 15-2 for an .882 winning percentage.
  • Elon has lost just two points in five matches at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season, both coming against Liberty.
  • In addition to its perfect 11-0 doubles mark at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this spring, the Phoenix is 21-2 in completed singles contests at its home facility.
 
The Anderson Era
  • Head coach Elizabeth Anderson is in her 22nd season leading the maroon and gold. 
  • Anderson has turned Elon into a consistent winner. Under her guidance, the Phoenix has posted 19 consecutive winning seasons, all of which have included double-digit victories. 
  • Since joining the CAA in the 2014-15 season, Elon has won at least one match in all 10 of its CAA Tournament appearances. Anderson led the program to the CAA championship match for the first time in 2022 and its first CAA title in 2025 to earn an NCAA Tournament bid.
  • In Elon's final season in the Southern Conference, Anderson led the maroon and gold to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth in 2013. The Phoenix won its first Southern Conference championship that season to qualify. 
  • Since taking over as head coach in 2005, Anderson has tallied 315 victories at Elon. Her winning percentage is 62% in 505 career matches. 
  • Anderson was named CAA Coach of the Year in 2025, the second time in her career she earned the honor.
  • Elon has also been a strong performer in the classroom during Anderson's tenure. The program has earned All-ITA Academic Team honors in 20 consecutive seasons. 
 
Scouting South Alabama
  • The Jaguars are unbeaten this season, entering Wednesday with an 8-0 record.
  • South Alabama last played on Feb. 28, a 4-1 home victory against Tulane.
  • The Jaguars are 3-0 away from home this season, which includes a pair of road victories.
  • Rio Maeda has played No. 1 singles this spring for the Jaguars and has a 5-2 record.
  • Four different Jaguars have posted six singles wins – Kenza Elakili, Manal Ennaciri, Jana Rovira and Cristina Tchanichev, who is a perfect 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Jade Marie is also without a loss (5-0) playing No. 5 singles
  • South Alabama is a combined 35-6 in singles matches this spring and is unbeaten at the Nos. 3 and 5 spots.
  • Ennaciri and Elakili are South Alabama's top doubles duo with four victories this spring at the No. 1 spot. Maeda and Rovira have won four matches playing No. 2 doubles, with Marie and Ava Rath also on four wins at the No. 3 spot.
  • The Jaguars have lost a pair of doubles points this season but rallied to win both of those matches against West Florida and Tarleton State.
  • South Alabama is led by head coach Jaco Keyser, who is in his 21st season leading the program.
