Buccaneers Deal Phoenix Road Loss

CHARLESTON, SC -- Ed O'Neil netted 15 points and swiped three steals as Charleston Southern ousted Elon 61-52 Saturday afternoon at the CSU Field House for its third win in a row.

Charles White added 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals for the Buccaneers (10-14, 6-5 Big South Conference). David Hall led the way for the Phoenix (11-13, 6-5) with 15 points and eight boards while Shamar Johnson tallied 12 markers.

CSU opened the contest with a strong start as a lay-up by Chris Warzynski gave the Buccaneers a 12-4 advantage with 14:51 left in the first half. CSU held on to take a 28-20 lead into the locker room on the strength of 10 first-half points from White.

Elon rallied back for a 50-49 edge with 3:47 to play, but the Buccaneers outscored the Phoenix 12-2 down the stretch to snatch the victory. CSU used a 42-31 rebounding advantage to negate 25 Buccaneer turnovers.

Elon now returns to the friendly confines of Alumni Gym Monday to host its first-ever regionally-televised men's basketball game when it faces Big South leader UNC Asheville at 9 p.m.

The Phoenix enters the contest as the best home team in the league with a 9-1 record at Alumni Gym this season, including a perfect 5-0 mark against conference opponents. Elon is the only Big South team unbeaten at home in league competition.
