WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- J.D. McNeill shot an even-par 72 to guide Elon to a share of third place after the opening round of the 18-team Colonial Intercollegiate Monday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
McNeill followed up a front-nine 34 with a back-nine 38 on the 6,868-yard course to snag a share of seventh place in the 100-golfer field. Teammates Ryan Loucks (Tied 17th, 34-40--74) and James Hockman (Tied 17th, 38-36--74) joined McNeill in the top 20 of the individual standings.
Entering Tuesday's second (and final) round, the Phoenix (295) and Seton Hall (295) trail only James Madison (290) and host William & Mary (294). Elon leads George Mason (299), Maryland (300), Georgetown (307), William & Mary "B" (311), Temple (312), Towson (312), Navy (313), Villanova (315), George Washington (315), Liberty (316), Maryland-Baltimore County (316), St. Joseph's, PA (324), Drexel (338) and Hampton (352).
Phoenix golfers Andrew Koenig (Tied 21st, 36-39--75) and Mark Hunsicker (Tied 47th, 39-40--79) also rank in the field's top half at the tournament's midway point.
