GREENVILLE, NC -- Andrew Koenig and Mark Hunsicker each hammered an even-par 72 Saturday to lift Elon to eighth place in the 25-team field at the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate at Bradford Creek Golf Club.
Elon (290-295-296--881) sat in 10th entering the tournament's final round, but strong performances by Koenig and Hunsicker propelled the Phoenix past Rhode Island and Furman on the event's second (and last) day.
James Hockman (Tied 19th, 72-72-74--218), Ryan Loucks (Tied 22nd, 69-72-78--219), Koenig (Tied 38th, 75-75-72--222), Hunsicker (Tied 43rd, 74-77-72--223) and J.D. McNeill (Tied 101st, 76-76-81--233) all contributed to the Phoenix efforts in the 128-golfer tournament.
UNC Wilmington (283-283-290--856) held off host East Carolina (292-277-292--861) by five shots on the 7,033-yard course for the team title. ECU was followed by Coastal Carolina (286-287-289--862), Virginia Commonwealth (287-286-298--871), Campbell (287-289-299--875), Francis Marion (296-282-297--875) and Old Dominion (290-289-298--877).
Elon beat Rhode Island (289-293-301-883), St. John's (295-291-299--885), Furman (294-290-301--885), Winthrop (294-296-303--893), Richmond (295-294-304--893), UNC Greensboro (298-292-303--893), Bethune-Cookman (301-289-306--896), Seton Hall (296-296-306--898), Tennessee State (301-299-299--899), Appalachian State (302-296-301--899), Connecticut (300-299-301--900), Liberty (299-299-303--901), Army (304-308-294--906), De Paul (299-304-303--906), Cincinnati (306-303-308--917), Pennsylvania (310-300-313--923) and Marquette (313-314-311--938).
The Phoenix will now take a break from competition, awaiting the 2002 PUPS/Big South Conference Championship on April 14-16. This year's league tournament is hosted by Coastal Carolina and played at the Sea Trail Plantation and Golf Resort in Sunset Beach, NC.
