Demon Deacons Down Phoenix

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – No. 19 Wake Forest scored early and often on its way to a 97-55 men's basketball victory over Elon Saturday afternoon at Joel Coliseum

For the Demon Deacons (2-0), 13 players appeared on the floor and 11 appeared in the scoring column. For the Phoenix (0-3), 11 played and 10 scored.

It was a homecoming of sorts for the Elon staff. Head coach Ernie Nestor spent 14 seasons as an assistant at Wake Forest. Two of his assistants, Tim Fuller and Jim Fitzpatrick, played for Nestor and the Demon Deacons.

But their return got off to a rocky start when Elon missed 10 of its first 11 shots and committed 10 turnovers while falling behind 16-2. The Phoenix never recovered and the Demon Deacons never looked back.

Wake Forest out-dueled Elon in field goal percentage (55.4-30.0), three-point field goal percentage (37.5-25.0), free throw percentage (73.1-59.1), rebounds (44-35), assists (26-12), turnovers (19-29), blocked shots (4-3) and steals (16-9).

Eric Williams (16 points), Jamaal Levy (13 points, eight rebounds), Justin Gray (13 points) and Kyle Visser (12 points) spearheaded the Demon Deacons. Elon was led by Jackson Atoyebi (11 points, eight rebounds) and Carlos Moreira (10 points).
