Winters, Kosmalski Power Davidson Past Elon

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Brendan Winters canned 26 points and Logan Kosmalski registered 22 markers as Davidson improved to a perfect 8-0 in the friendly confines of Belk Arena with a 72-58 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over Elon Saturday night.

The Wildcats (8-10 overall, 3-4 Southern Conference) used a typically stout home defensive effort to ground the Phoenix (5-13, 1-5) attack. The first 10 minutes of the opening half provided a back-and-forth battle for the Hall of Fame Game fans.

Elon took a 17-15 lead on a three-point bucket from Scottie Rice. The 'Cats took an 18-17 edge on a Kosmalski free throw, then clamped down on defense and never trailed again. Switching between tight man-to-man coverage and a 1-3-1 zone that befuddled the visiting Phoenix, Davidson held Elon to a 29-percent first-half shooting performance.

Kosmalski and Winters led the charge with 14 and 13 points respectively in the first period as Davidson closed the half on a 22-5 run to take a 37-22 advantage into the locker room. The second half saw Elon cut the Davidson lead to nine points on three separate occasions in the second half, but never get any closer.

The Phoenix ended up shooting 33.3 percent for the night as Davidson relied on its defense and interior passing to maintain a comfortable advantage throughout the final 20 minutes. Rice tallied 15 points – 10 in the second half – to pace the Phoenix.
