CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Elon broke away from a 55-55 tie with less than two minutes remaining and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Kyocera Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship with a 64-58 win over Wofford Wednesday afternoon.

With the score tied at 55, Elon guard Steve Harvin made a pair of free throws with 1:36 to play to give Elon (8-22) a 57-55 lead. Wofford’s Adrien Borders was fouled by Brian Waters with 1:17 to play but Borders missed the front end of the one and one and Colin Wyatt grabbed the rebound for the Phoenix.
Following a 30-second timeout by Elon, Scottie Rice hit a short jumper for a 59-55 lead with 53 seconds left.
Rice fouled Wofford’s Greg Taylor with 42 seconds left and Taylor missed the free throw as the Terriers were two for seven from the line in the second half after hitting six of seven at the line in the first half.
Elon’s Le’Vonn Jordan hit two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to extend the Phoenix lead to six at 61-55. Eric Marshall of Wofford (14-14) hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to make it a three-point Elon lead at 61-58.
Wyatt pushed the lead back to 63-58 with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left as the Phoenix made seven of eight at the line in the final 1:36 of the game.
Wyatt led the Phoenix with 20 points and 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double of the season. Borders scored 15 points for Wofford followed by Eric Marshall who scored 14. ‘I thought both teams played really well,” said Elon head coach Ernie Nestor
“The better team today won the basketball game,” said Wofford head coach Mike Young. “They were better inside, they were better outside. They were better on their shot selection.”
Wofford’s campaign ends at 14-14 – its first .500 season in 10 years of play at the Division I level – while the Phoenix emerges victorious for the sixth time in nine games since opening the year at 2-19.
