Phoenix Men's Tennis to Open Season at Wake Forest

Michael Leonard '91, third-year Phoenix head coach and 2006 SoCon Coach of the Year, welcomes back all nine lettermen from last season's Southern Conference regular season co-champion squad. The Phoenix finished 19-5 overall last spring, including an 8-1 SoCon mark and a 12-0 ledger at home.

The 2006 SoCon Freshman of the Year, sophomore Damon Gooch finished 17-5 at No. 1 singles last spring and was the only Southern Conference player recognized all season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Gooch earned All-Southern Conference status in both singles and doubles. Junior Anuwat Dalodom, 11-5 at No. 2 last spring, won three rounds at the All-American National Championships this past fall.

Senior and second-year team captain Sebastian Bredberg, a team-best 18-5 at No. 3 a year ago, will again provide leadership. Last spring, sophomore Gustaf Asplund fashioned a 16-6 record at No. 4 singles and a team-best 13-5 doubles record with Dalodom as his partner. A fixture at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles, senior Austin Fenn has earned All-Southern Conference distinction in doubles the past two seasons.

Junior Mason Schermerhorn, N.C. State University transfer, joined the squad, immediately demonstrating his potential this fall by reaching the semi-final round of the Wolfpack Invitational. Sophomore Kevin Beard, sophomore Kevin Colin, senior ITA Scholar-Athlete Alex Garrett, lone freshman Clark Howell and senior Kyle Smialek provide depth.
