Schermerhorn Tabbed Verizon Wireless Performer of the Month

ELON, N.C. – For the past three years, Elon University Athletics and Verizon Wireless have teamed up to name a Verizon Wireless “Performer of the Month” each month. The recipient of this honor for March 2007 is junior men's tennis player Mason Schermerhorn (Colfax, N.C./Southwest Guilford).

In his first season with the Phoenix, the North Carolina State University transfer amassed an 8-1 singles record for the past month – 7-0 at No. 3 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 – with his only loss coming to a nationally-ranked opponent at No. 16 Duke University. He also forged a 6-0 singles slate in Southern Conference action last month.

In doubles competition, Schermerhorn and teammate Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale) fashioned a 7-2 mark – 5-1 vs. SoCon foes – all at No. 1. The Schermerhorn/Gooch combo knocked off two of the three nationally-ranked duos it faced en route to reaching a No. 75 ranking itself.

Schermerhorn helped Elon post an 8-1 record for the month. The Phoenix only lost to No. 16 Duke, but came away with a victory at No. 55 Furman. Having clinched at least a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title for the second-straight year, No. 44 Elon is currently 17-2 overall and 8-0 in the league.
