Phoenix Men Host Southern Virginia in Home Opener

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix men's basketball team welcomes the Southern Virginia Knights to the "Nest" for its home opener on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.  The Phoenix is 0-1 following a loss at West Virginia on Saturday night while the Knights are 2-1 on the season.

Since Elon moved to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 season, the program has gone 7-2 in home openers and has won three straight openers at home – Southeastern (78-42 in 2005-06), Montreat (85-72 in 2006-07) and Erskine (77-58 in 2007-08).  Under head coach Ernie Nestor, the Phoenix is 4-1 in home openers.

In Saturday's loss at West Virginia, a Sweet 16 team a year ago, Elon was led by 12 points apiece from Brett James and Adam Constantine.  Constantine also led all players with eight rebounds in the game.

Southern Virginia enters with a 2-1 mark with wins over Penn State-York (108-81) and Penn State-Mont Alto (86-59) and a loss at West Virginia Tech (83-75).  The Knights will play four NCAA Division I opponents this season – Elon, Coastal Carolina, Longwood and VMI.

James, a senior guard, netted 12 points at West Virginia, moving him within 78 points of 1,000 for his career.  If he reaches the mark, James would become the 32nd player in the 100-season history of the Elon program to do so.

The 2008-09 season represents the 100th season in the history of the Elon program.  The program has not run for 100 consecutive seasons, however, as the school suspended its athletics programs during World War II.  The men's basketball team is the second Elon program to reach 100 seasons.  The Elon baseball team played its 100th season in 2002 – the first year it made the NCAA Baseball Regionals.
