ELON, N.C. – Roger Dugas (Georgeville, Quebec) will join the Elon University men’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season, as announced by first-year Phoenix head coach Matt Matheny. Dugas has spent the last two seasons competing with Canada Basketball’s National Elite Development Academy (NEDA), while attending St. Mary’s Catholic School. NEDA is a national training center program that brings together the top 12 male development athletes from across Canada.
“Roger is a 6-8 versatile forward with the ability to pass, catch and shoot,” said Matheny. “We are excited about his versatility to play both inside and on the perimeter.”
Dugas, a 6-8, 205-pound forward, averaged double figures and earned a starting role during his final year at NEDA. He has competed in tournaments all over the world, including the 2008 Albert Schweitzer Tournament, a junior national tournament that features 16 of the most outstanding junior teams from around the world. Dugas’ squad finished fifth out of 16 countries.
In the summer of 2007, Dugas played with the Quebec Provincial U-17 team at the national tournament. He was named a first-team all-star after helping the team to a second-place finish. Most recently, Dugas played in a junior national tournament in France, leading his squad to a first-place showing.
Dugas joins Brett Ervin as the two newcomers to the Phoenix team. Ervin, a 6-7, 220-pound forward, hails from Buckhannon, W.Va., and spent his prep years at Robert C. Byrd High School. The two-time second-team all-conference selection helped his team to a 22-3 overall record, a conference title and a state quarterfinals appearance as a junior.
