SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- In a ballot of the Southern Conference media, the Elon Phoenix men's basketball team has been chosen to finish in a tie for fourth in the league's North Division. The media tabbed Appalachian State as the favorite in the North Division while selecting Wofford to capture the South Division crown in 2010-11.
Appalachian State collected 22 first-place votes to earn 170 total points in the poll. Western Carolina was picked second and earned eight first-place nods for 146 points. Chattanooga's 126 points placed them third. Elon and Samford both received 64 points in the poll to tie for fourth while UNC Greensboro had 60 points to sit sixth in the division.
In the South, Wofford claimed 24 of the 30 first-place votes for a total of 174 points. The Terriers bested College of Charleston's 156 points. The Cougars received six first-place votes. Sitting third through sixth were Davidson (118 points), The Citadel (74), Furman (70) and Georgia Southern (38).
The Elon men recently knocked off Greensboro College 103-60 in their first exhibition contest of the year. The Phoenix will host its final exhibition on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Washington & Lee before opening the regular season with a 9 p.m. game on Friday, Nov. 12 at South Carolina and will be televised on Fox Sports Carolinas.
