FLORENCE, S.C. -- All five of Elon's men's golfers fired rounds of 75 or under as the Phoenix climbed into fourth place with a total score of 584 after the second round of the 2010 Southern Conference Championship being held at the Country Club of South Carolina on Monday.
Stephen Dressel and
Phil Bartholomew are both tied for fifth individually.
Furman, ranked 49th in the nation, leads the field with a two-day total of 559 (280-279) and leads second-place UNC Greensboro (290-280--570) by 11 strokes heading into Tuesday's final round of play. Georgia Southern (290-286--576) is third while the Phoenix's rounds of 295 and 289 for a total of 584 is fourth in the 11-team event.
Dressell followed up Sunday's round of 73 with a two-under 70 on Monday while Bartholomew shot an even par 72 on Monday after going one-under on Sunday. The duo each has a two-round score of 143 and is six strokes back of co-leaders Austin Reeves and Garland Ferrell of Furman. Bartholomew has carded nine birdies in his 36 holes.
Jayson Judy sits in a tie for 14th with a score of 145 (72-73) and has the second-most pars during the event, 28.
Mike Fekete knocked five strokes off of his first-round score to post a total of 153 (79-74). He sits 44th in the field of 55. Finally, Scott Hockemeyer is tied for 48th with a score of 155 (80-75).
The Phoenix enters Tuesday's final round with a three-stroke edge on both Western Carolina (295-292) and College of Charleston (297-290) who are tied for fifth with a score of 587. Thirty-fourth rated Chattanooga is seventh with a 589 (295-294). Wofford (305-290--595), Appalachian State (290-306--596), Davidson (302-302--604) and Samford (305-299--604) round out the field.
The tournament's final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
