ELON, N.C. – The Elon men’s tennis team will have players in the finals of the top two singles draws and the top doubles draw following another strong day of competition at the 2011 Elon Fall Invitational at the Burlington Tennis Center. Matches begin on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and will be played on campus at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
In A1 Singles, Elon rookie
Stefan Fortmann picked up two three-set singles victories to advance to the finals. Fortmann opened the day with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat of NC State’s Rafael Paez. In the semifinals, Fortmann pulled out a difficult 7-6 first set before dropping the second set, 6-1, to Krzysztof Muzalewski of ODU. The Elon freshman bounced back and took the deciding set, 6-4, to earn a date in the finals against Ramiro Blanco of USC Upstate. The championship match will take place at noon on Sunday.
“Sunday should be a great day as we have several guys competing in the finals,” said Elon head coach
Michael Leonard. “Two of our freshmen — Stefan and Jordan — will be in singles championship matches and Cameron and Eric are unbeaten in doubles this fall, playing for their second straight title. We look forward to being on campus and hope to have a good crowd there for the last day of the tournament.”
Freshman
Jordan Kaufman also had a big day for the Phoenix, moving on to the championship match of the A2 Singles bracket. Kaufman began with a straight-set 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Coastal Carolina’s Leo Christofides. In his second match of the day, he rebounded after dropping the first set for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 win against Campbell’s David Clavera.
Doubles action will begin the day on Sunday and Elon fans can watch
Cameron Silverman and
Eric Turner as the duo aims to remain undefeated during the fall season. The pair earned an 8-4 result against NC State’s Will Rollinson and Julian Sullivan to move on to the title match. Silverman and Turner will challenge Wake Forest’s David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
