• This is the 103rd season of men’s basketball at Elon.
• The Phoenix made the move to Division I competition in the 1999-2000 season.
• Elon is led by third-year head coach Matt Matheny. The long-time Davidson assistant took over the program in March 2009 after helping the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, includ five trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Phoenix is 23-40 through Matheny’s first two years as head coach.
• Elon opens its season on the road for the sixth consecutive year.
• Elon is 59-39 (Record unknown during first four years of play) in season openers during its history and 4-8 in the first game of the season during its Division I era.
• The Phoenix opened up the 2010-11 campaign with a 94-79 loss at South Carolina. Elon’s last victory in a season opener was in the 2009-10 season as the Phoenix opened the Matt Matheny era with a 91-86 at Lipscomb.
• This will be Elon’s first-ever meeting with UMass. The Phoenix has only faced four of the current Atlantic 10 members — Charlotte, George Washington, Richmond and Xavier. Elon is 2-10 against those schools with wins against Charlotte and George Washington. The Phoenix’s last meeting against an A-10 school came in the 2009 Preseason NIT and was a 75-61 loss to Charlotte.
