Round 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- John Somers fired a two-over par 74 to lead the Elon men's golf team on day one of the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday. The Phoenix shot a round of 307 to sit in a tie for 16th in a field of 22 teams.
Somers is tied for 28th in the individual standings. There are 124 golfers in the field.
Two strokes back of Somers is
Stephen Dressel who sits in a tie for 52nd with a mark of 76 while
Jack Adkins fired a round of 77 to sit in a tie for 63rd.
Clay Holland's round of 80 has him in a tie for 104th and
Tanner Norton will enter round two in a tie for 115th with a score of 83.
Kennesaw State posted a six-under 282 to pace the field on Friday. The Owls lead Virginia Tech (285) by three strokes and third-place Clemson (287) by five shots entering Saturday's second round. East Carolina's even-par round of 288 has the Pirates fourth while Gardner-Webb holds down the number five spot after a first-round mark of 293.
Individually, Purdue's Wiliam Sjaichudin holds a two-stroke edge on East Carolina's Harold Varner atop the leaderboard. Sjaichudin posted a seven-under 65 on day one. The first round saw a total of 14 golfers go under par.
Round two will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning for Elon.
