ELON, N.C. – The Elon University Department of Athletics held its 37th annual athletics awards banquet on Monday evening, May 9, at Alumni Gym, recognizing and remembering many of the outstanding performances of the 2010-11 school year. Elon senior quarterback and the Southern Conference’s all-time leading passer Scott Riddle and 2011 SoCon Field Performer of the Year Veronica Day were selected as the Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete award winners.
The Stein H. Basnight Outstanding Athlete Award has been presented annually since 1958 in memory of the late Stein H. Basnight of Chapel Hill, N.C. The award honors the most outstanding Phoenix male and female athletes of the year, as determined by the Elon Department of Athletics’ administrative staff. Jesse Basnight, Jr. represented the Basnight family at the banquet.
Riddle, a first-team all-league selection by the SoCon's coaches, capped a stellar career by throwing for 3,231 yards on 274 completions in 10 games in 2010. The Ramseur, N.C. native tossed 28 touchdown passes to lead the league. By leading the SoCon in passing yards this past year, Riddle became the first quarterback in the storied history of the SoCon to lead the league in passing for four consecutive seasons. He also topped the league in pass efficiency (154.5) and total offense (318.8 yards per game). Twice this season Riddle threw for over 400 yards, including a 452-yard, five-touchdown performance in the season-ending win over Western Carolina. Riddle ended the year having thrown a touchdown pass in 22 consecutive games, surpassing his own mark of 21 set early in his career. Riddle finished 13th in the voting for the 2010 Walter Payton Award and was named to Phil Steele's 2010 FCS All-American Team. Riddle holds a total of 41 combined Elon, SoCon and NCAA records.
A three-time SoCon champion and a nine-time all-conference honoree, Day holds Elon’s outdoor record in the long jump and triple jump and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that set the school record at the SoCon outdoor championships. Day also holds Elon’s indoor track and field record in the long jump and triple jump. The SoCon Field Performer of the Year this past outdoor season, Day claimed the triple jump title with a leap of 41’5.75” at the conference meet. Day was a three-time all-conference performer during the outdoor season and was named the SoCon Outdoor Field Athlete of the Month in March. The Vienna, Va. native earned SoCon Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors three times in 2011. During the indoor season, Day won the league triple jump title on her way to a pair of all-conference accolades in the triple jump and long jump. In all, Day won a total of 11 titles combined in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100-meter relay during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Seniors Chris Long and Jackie Gonzalez were recognized as the recipients of the Robert C. Browne Memorial Sportsmanship Award. The Browne Award was established in 1972 in memory of Elon alumnus Robert C. Browne by his sister, Pretto Browne-Crumpton, and her husband, Dr. J.L. Crumpton, and is presented annually to the Elon male and female athletes who have best displayed exemplary qualities of sportsmanship as determined by the Elon Department of Athletics administrative staff.
Long averaged a career-best and team-high 14.7 points per game for the Elon men’s basketball team in 2010-11 while also leading the Southern Conference with 6.0 assists per game. His assist numbers ranked in the top 20 in the nation and the point guard ended his career with 528 helpers, second-most in Elon history. The native of Charleston, W. Va. dished off 188 assists this year to rank second on the school’s single-season chart. Long became the 33rd Elon player to score at least 1,000 points, eclipsing the mark with a free throw at UNC Greensboro on January 10th. On senior night in Alumni Gym, Long dumped in a career-high 30 points and contributed 10 assists to help the Phoenix sweep the season series with UNCG. He completed his career in the school’s top five in three-pointers (172), assists (528) and steals (155).
A native of Suwanee, Ga., Gonzalez will finish her softball career at Elon as one of the most prolific hitters of all-time. Gonzalez ranks third all time in Elon history with 206 career hits, while her career batting average of .347 ranks fourth in program history. A business administration major, Gonzalez was the catalyst in Elon’s run to the SoCon title last year, as the second baseman earned league player of the month honors in May after hitting .442 over a 12-game stretch to lead the Phoenix to a conference championship and an NCAA Regional berth. This season, Gonzalez was a preseason all-conference selection and has ranked near the top of the league in batting average all season.
Men’s soccer midfielder James Carroll and women’s golfer Virginia Mayer were recipients of the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete accolades. Carroll maintains a 3.97 grade point average in computer science, while Mayer holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting.
The Hook Award has been presented annually since 1975 in honor of Dr. A.L. Hook to the Phoenix male and female junior or senior athletes who possess the highest cumulative grade-point average with a minimum of two years of playing time at Elon.
