Men's Basketball

Trip Abroad Continues for Men's Hoops

The Elon men's basketball team suffered its first loss during its 2011 foreign trip, falling 92-82 to Nurnberger Basketball Club, a member of Germany's Pro A league team. The Phoenix is 2-1 during its trip so far and the group has made its way to Italy where it will spend the remainder of the journey.

Game 3 — Nurnberger Basketball Club 92, Elon 82

Nurnberger Basketball Club overcame a 12-point second-half deficit with a 14-0 run to defeat Elon 92-82.  The run spanned the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarters, wiping out a 64-52 Elon advantage. NBC is a member of Germany's Pro A league and features several former Division I players alongside other German nationals.

Sophomore Lucas Troutman led the Phoenix with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Senior Drew Spradlin added 19 points and five rebounds while sophomore Sebastian Koch posted 12 points, five boards and seven assists.

The first half was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands eight times. NBC jumped out to a 21-17 lead and led 30-22 early in the second quarter before an 8-0 Elon run tied the score at 30. The Phoenix took a one-point edge, 45-44, into halftime behind Troutman's 13 points, five rebounds and Spradlin's eight points, four rebounds.

Sparked by a barrage of three-pointers from Spradlin and Ryley Beaumont, Elon jumped out to its largest lead of 64-52 late in the third period. After an NBC timeout, the host team shifted the momentum and reversed the lead with its 14-0 run.

Sophomore Jack Isenbarger broke the drought with a long two-pointer to tie the game at 66. NBC rebuffed the Phoenix by pounding the ball inside to widen its lead. For the game, NBC outscored the Phoenix 46-22 in the paint. The home team further neutralized any Elon threat by converting 24-of-26 free throws.

Elon rookie Austin Hamilton contributed another solid all-around performance with five points, four rebounds and seven helpers. Beaumont ended the night with six points and five boards while Isenbarger contributed points. Behind the frontcourt toughness of Beaumont, Troutman and Roger Dugas, the Phoenix outrebounded the much bigger NBC squad, 38-30, including 15 offensive rebounds.

Elon completes its tour with a game in Italy against Treviglio on Saturday, August 20th.
