DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. --
The Elon men's golf team is set to take part in the 76th Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship event which gets underway on Sunday, April 15 at the Ralston Creek Course on Daniel Island, S.C., and runs through Tuesday, April 17.  The tournament will tee off at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning and admission is free.

The tournament will be hosted by Ralston Creek for the first time this year.  The 7,446-yard course was designed by Rees Jones and has hosted events such as the 2011 Nationwide Tour Championship last fall.

Georgia Southern is the defending league champion, as the Eagles won last year's title in Florence, S.C.  GSU defeated UNCG by five strokes.

Chattanooga enters the tournament as the league's top-rated team.  The Mocs rank 34th according to Golfstat.  Georgia Southern (84th) and College of Charleston (95th) also rank among the top 100.

Elon is looking for its first-ever SoCon men's golf title and placed seventh in last year's championship event.

John Somers has been the Phoenix's top performer this year.  He enters the tournament with a 75.21 stroke average over 29 rounds of play.  Tanner Norton's 75.66 average over 29 rounds is second on the squad.  They will be joined by Stuart Kaufman, Blayze Dipasquale and Jack Adkins in the Elon lineup.

The Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship has been played every season since 1933, aside from a four-year hiatus during World War II, and the event boasts past champions such as Arnold Palmer (1948-49) and Brad Faxon (1983).

The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
