ROUND ONE
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Elon women's golf team opened its 2012-13 season with the first of two rounds at the Terrier Intercollegiate on Monday. The Phoenix women, with three freshmen in the lineup, finished their opening round with a 308 to sit in fifth place in the 13-team field.
Leading the way for the maroon and gold was
Martyna Mierzwa who fired a first-round mark of 75 to share 13th place individually.
Just two strokes back in a tie for 21st in the 73-player field sits
Katie Partridge who shot a 77 over her first 18 holes of the year. In a tie for 28th are both
Sunna Vidisdottir and
Emily Brooks who each carded a 78 in their first collegiate action.
Rounding out the Elon contingent was the third freshman,
Kathryn Buckingham who shot a 79 to sit in a tie for 31st after a round.
Gardner-Webb sits atop the team leaderboard after shooting a 294 on day one. The Runnin' Bulldogs lead UNCW by two strokes. UNC Pembroke (301) and Mercer (304) also sit between the Phoenix and the top team position.
The maroon and gold leads both Samford and High Point by a stroke entering Tuesday's final round of play. The rest of the field includes host Wofford (311), Appalachian State (313), USC Upstate (313), Presbyterian (321), The Citadel (329) and South Carolina State (332).
Gardner-Webb's Mary K Donovan fired a 68 in the opening round to set a new tournament 18-hole record and hold the top individual spot with a round to play.
The final round of play will get underway at 9:30 a.m. at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
