SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon women’s track and field freshman
Caroline McCaslin was named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office on Wednesday morning, April 10.
McCaslin set a new school-record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last Saturday, April 6, at the Duke Invitational. The Prospect, Ky., native ran a time of 10:34.87 in the race, breaking the previous school mark by nearly 20 seconds, and finished fifth overall in the event.
McCaslin’s time is also the best performance in the conference this season with a 25-second difference over teammate
Tereza Novotna, who holds the second-fastest mark. McCaslin and Novotna are also the only athletes to run the event under the 11-minute mark this season. McCaslin's performance is also currently 24th on the NCAA East Regional list.
This is the first weekly league accolade for McCaslin and the third overall for the Elon track and field program this year. Fellow freshmen
Megan Kirschling and
Sydney Griffin were also recognized during the indoor campaign.
The Phoenix will compete in its final regular-season meet at the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, April 13 prior to the 2013 SoCon Championships in Statesboro, Ga., on April 20-21.
