Phoenix Solid on Day One of Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Led by a one-under par 71 by Sunna Vidisdottir, the Elon women's golf team opened the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic with a first-round 306 (+18) to sit eighth in the field of 40 teams. The field includes five of the nation's top-100 teams according to Golfweek, including the 86th-ranked Phoenix.

Vidisdottir stands in a tie for fifth out of the 210 players competing in the tournament. She was tied for the third-most birdies over the first 18 holes with four and added 13 pars.

Four strokes back in a tie for 21st is Kelsey Badmaev. Badmaev achieved her 75 (+3) after a round that had four birdies and eight pars.

With a round of 79 (+7), Emily Brooks stands in a tie for 61st. She is followed by the duo of Heather Munro and Kristi Ingram who both carded rounds of 81 (+9) to tie for 100th.

Vidisdottir is three strokes off the lead held by Jacksonville State's Melania Bajo Geijo (68). She is one of three players in the fifth-place tie.

North Florida (297) edged out 94th-ranked Troy (298) by one stroke to hold the top spot in the team standings after round one. Chattanooga (299), ranked 79th, sits third, while host and 71st-rated College of Charleston and Western Carolina are tied for fourth with a 300.

Also between Elon and the top-five are Stetson (304) and Samford (305). The only other top-100 program in the field is 89th-ranked Seton Hall, which is tied for 30th with a 328.

After playing the Osprey Point course on Sunday, Elon will play its second round on the Oak Point course on Monday.
