ELON, N.C. – With plenty of fans in the stands for the Elon Football Kickoff, the Phoenix football team held its third scrimmage of its 2015 preseason camp inside Rhodes Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The offense accounted for three touchdowns, while both the defense and special teams units recorded TDs.
Running back
Brandon Gentry twice found the end zone, scoring first to cap a 16-play, 91-yard drive with a three-yard plunge. He later toted the ball in from five yards out. The third offensive score came when
Daniel Thompson tossed a three-yard touchdown pass to
Zach Duprey.
Julius Moore accounted for two scores. His first came on the first drive of the scrimmage when the offense attempted a 44-yard field goal. The attempt was blocked by
Corey Mitchell and scooped up by Moore who raced 60 yards into the end zone. Moore later intercepted a
Connor Christiansen pass and brought it back 48 yards for a TD.
With the battle for the starting quarterback position yet to be decided, Thompson and Christiansen each continued to make their case to earn the nod. Thompson passed for 115 yards while completing 13 of his 20 pass attempts. Christiansen hit on 21 of his 30 attempts for 152 yards. During the 91-yard scoring drive, Christiansen completed 10 of his 11 passes for 68 yards.
Gentry ended the day with 53 rushing yards on nine carries.
Malcolm Summers also finished with nine rushing attempts and gained 42 yards.
Tracey Coppedge finished with 43 rushing yards on five attempts and
B.J. Bennett ran for 28 yards on eight attempts.
Duprey had three catches for 17 yards, including his score.
John Luke Arrington snared six balls for 34 yards and
Lichota Seidewand made five catches for 60 yards.
