ELON, N.C. – Set to host Senior Day at Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon, April 23, Elon University women's lacrosse will battle Hofstra at noon in search of its third straight CAA win in its final home game of the regular season. The game can be seen on Lax Sports Network.
SAAC Food Drive
The Elon Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be hosting a food drive as part of the Colonial Athletic Association's fifth-annual conference-wide Food Drive Challenge from Wednesday, April 19 – Tuesday, April 25. SAAC members will be on hand at lacrosse's home game Sunday to collect nonperishable food items and monetary donations. With the help of Elon's Campus Kitchen, Elon's SAAC will donate all food and monetary gifts collected to Allied Churches of Alamance County. Those with a Phoenix Card can also donate by allowing their card to be swiped for a monetary donation.
LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix (10-5, 2-2 CAA) battled through a slow-moving first half last Sunday, April 16, to come away with a 6-3 victory over Delaware at Rudd Field. In the win,
Rachel Ramirez made 15 saves to tie her season high and
Stephanie Asher scored three goals to set the program's new single-season record for goals (48) and points (56). In the contest, Elon allowed just one second-half goal after going into half tied 2-2. Combined with the game against Drexel on Friday, April 14, the Phoenix allowed just one second-half goal on the weekend and five overall while scoring 21 of its own.
THE SERIES
Elon and Hofstra have split the first two matchups to date with both sides winning on the other's home field. A season ago, Elon went to Hofstra and earned a 12-5 win behind three goals apiece from
Sloane Kessler,
Shelby Scanlin and
Stephanie Asher with Kessler adding three assists.
SCOUTING THE PRIDE (8-6, 2-3 CAA)
Since dropping each of its first three CAA games to Drexel, Delaware and James Madison by an average of more than five goals (15.3 to 9.7), Hofstra has come alive in the last week with a 17-15 upset of No. 13 Towson and an 18-6 victory over William & Mary last time out on Friday. The Pride is led by Alyssa Parrella's 47 goals and 27 assists for 74 points. Last week, she was named CAA Player and Rookie of the Week while going on to take the IWLCA's Fast Break National Offensive Player of the Week.
LACROSSE'S HEISMAN
On March 16,
Stephanie Asher and
Rachel Ramirez were added to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List. The two players represent the first Elon athletes to be named to the watch list for the sport's highest honor. Asher's 48 goals this season leads the CAA and is 14th in the country with her 3.2 goals per game 23rd in the nation entering Sunday. Ramirez leads the CAA in saves, second in saves per game and third in ground balls. She has made 124 stops this year - good for 29th in the country - and has 44 ground balls on the season. For her efforts last week, Ramirez was tabbed CAA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
CENTURY SCORER
Stephanie Asher became the program's first player to reach the 100-career goal mark when she scored in the second half against No. 9 Notre Dame back on Feb. 23. She scored at least five goals in a game on four occasions with her season high coming March 26 with six goals against Davidson. The junior set a new program record for goals in a single season with four against Drexel on Friday, April 14, in a 15-2 win at home over the Dragons. She is the only player to log at least 40 goals in a season in program history.
AN ACTIVE LEADER
With 130 career goals,
Stephanie Asher is 22nd on the NCAA's active goal-scoring list entering the weekend and her 2.71 goals per contest is 14th-best in the country. She is one of just five juniors among the Top 25 active goal scorers in the country in just 48 games played. Asher is also the CAA's active goal scoring leader.
CAA TOURNAMENT WATCH
With just five CAA games left this season, Elon is on top of a logjam in the middle of the CAA standings at 2-2 in conference play. James Madison has already locked up the No. 1 seed at 5-0 and Towson currently sits second with a 3-2 record. Elon, Drexel and Delaware are all tied at 2-2, each with two games remaining. Should Elon win Sunday, it can lock up the No. 3 seed in the tournament with JMU defeating Delaware and Towson beating Drexel. Elon can only up its seed to No. 2 if it wins its last two regular season games and Drexel beats Towson on Sunday in Maryland. The CAA Tournament is set for May 5 and 7 at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.
ON THE NATIONAL SCENE
This week, Elon dropped out of the IWLCA poll even though it won both of its games last week. In the Cascade/
Inside Lacrosse poll, the Phoenix is still receiving votes with six other teams. Back on March 6 when Elon was No. 16 in the IL poll, it marked the first time in Elon's four-year history the team was ranked in a national poll.
SIGNATURE WINS
With the Feb. 11 win over No. 13 Virginia and the March 1 victory over No. 19 Virginia Tech, Elon has now defeated three nationally ranked teams over the course of the last two seasons. In 2016, the Phoenix went on the road to No. 10 Duke and won 7-6 in Durham, N.C. Elon owns an all-time record of 3-9 against ACC opponents. Overall against ranked teams, Elon is 3-13 in 16 games to date.
PRESEASON HONORS
Two Phoenix earned preseason All-CAA honors on Jan. 20 with
Stephanie Asher and
Rachel Ramirez being named to the All-CAA team and
Sloane Kessler and
Alexis Zadjura earning honorable mentions. In the preseason poll, Elon was selected to finish third behind Towson and James Madison. The third-place selection is the highest Elon has been in a preseason poll in the program's brief history.
UP NEXT
Elon will close the regular season on Saturday, April 29, in a 1 p.m. game against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The Tribe is winless in conference play this season and stands at 3-13 overall on the year.
