ELON, N.C. – Elon University volleyball is looking to extend its winning streak this Tuesday, Sept. 17 as the Phoenix (4-5) closes out its four-match home stand against Winthrop at 7 p.m. inside Schar Center.

SERIES HISTORY
Tomorrow night marks the first meeting between the two programs since Sept. 20, 2014 in the second match of the Wake Forest Deacon Classic. The Eagles (5-3) defeated Elon in straight sets as
Sydney Busa led all players with 15 kills. Kayla Agae tallied seven kills, while Chelsea Rafetto fell just short of her third straight double-double with 29 assists and nine digs. Chanelle Smith led the team on defense with 12 digs, while Kris Harris, Rafetto and Ally Karle all posted two blocks.
Winthrop holds an 18-1 lead in the all-time series.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
The Eagles are coming off a pair of straight-set wins over Southern Miss and Georgia Southern at the Georgia Southern Invitational last Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. Winthrop is currently atop the Big South Conference standings with a one-match lead over Campbell and UNC Asheville.
Nikkia Benitez and Morgan Bossler have paced the Eagles attack with 92 and 78 kills, respectively. Siani Yamaguchi is Winthrop's primary setter with 233 assists, while Benitez is also a threat when serving with a team-high 12 aces. On defense, Hannah Lackey has collected 123 digs and Yamaguchi is close behind with 107. Bossler owns 31 blocks, Sydney Gunter has 15, and Makayla Doyle and Yamaguchi both have 14.
Benitez was named the Tournament MVP at Georgia Southern, while Doyle and Yamaguchi joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
PHOENIX HANDS WAKE FOREST FIRST LOSS
The Deacs entered last Sunday's match against the Phoenix undefeated at 7-0. However, the maroon and gold built an early 2-0 match lead and edged the visitors 15-13 in set five for the program's first win over Wake Forest in its Division I history. The victory also marked the team's first against a Power-5 program since a 3-1 results at NC State on Sept. 4, 2004.
Leah Daniel finished with a team-high 20 kills (.265) and added an ace, five digs, and three blocks.
Nori Thomas followed with 17 kills (.382) to go along with two digs and three blocks, while
Kellyn Trowse totaled 12 kills (.146) with an ace and 14 digs.
Kodi Garcia tallied 31 assists with three aces and four digs, and
Haylie Clark had 26 assists with eight digs.
Jordan Gower recorded a new season high with 17 digs,
Alex VanWestrienen tied her season high with 10, and
Elizabeth Coil made four blocks.
KRZEMINSKI NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Jenn Krzeminski was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Week earlier on Monday. In a 3-0 week for the Phoenix, the freshman from Furlong, Pa. totaled 20 kills, a .385 hitting percentage, four service aces, and 13 blocks (1.08/set). She started off last week with three aces, seven kills, a .500 clip, three digs, and five blocks as the Phoenix swept N.C. Central in the team's home opener Tuesday night, Sept. 10. The middle blocker then set a new season with eight kills (.313) against Furman on Friday. Krzeminski added a dig and six blocks (two solo) in the 3-1 victory versus the Paladins. She played all five sets in a 3-2 upset of Wake Forest on Sunday, Sept. 16, finishing with five kills (.364), an ace, and two blocks.
UP NEXT
This weekend sees the maroon and gold traveling to Charlottesville, Va. for the Jefferson Cup, hosted by Virginia on Sept. 20-21. Elon begins the tournament Friday morning at 10 a.m. versus Lehigh, then plays again in a 3:30 p.m. meeting with UNCG. The Phoenix then plays the host Cavaliers Saturday at 10 a.m. to end its trip.
