RALEIGH, N.C. – Elon University men's golf recorded an even 288 in round two and a one-under par 287 in round three to finish sixth at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
The host Wolfpack won the team title with a 17-under par 847, UNCG came in second with a 12-under 852, and Virginia Tech placed third with a four-under 860. Lipscomb and Furman both combined to shoot a three-under 861 to tie for fourth, and the Phoenix finished two strokes behind them with a one-under 863. UNCG's Nick Lyerly captured the individual title with a 10-under 206, and East Carolina's AJ Beechler was the runner-up after carding an eight-under 208.
"It was quite a week for Elon Golf," said head coach
Don Hill. "Coming off of our win at the Phoenix Invitational, I wasn't sure how our young team would react to such a quick turnaround."
HIGHLIGHTS
Garrett Risner was the top finisher for Elon, tying for 13th with a two-under 214. He started off the day with a two-under 70 in the second round and capped off the tournament with a one-over 73 in round three.
William Frodigh turned in a 74 and a 71 to tie for 25th at 217 (+1).
Juan Callejo Ropero had a strong finish, following up a 73 in round two with a four-under 68 in round three. The freshman from Madrid, Spain recorded three birdies on the front nine and another four on the back nine to end up tied for 29th at 218 (+2).
Bronson Myers and
Matthew Doyle both tied for 47th with a five-over 221, and
Pedro Rabadan rounded out Elon's scores with a 223 (+7) to tie for 60th.
Callejo Ropero and Frodigh led the maroon and gold with 11 birdies each. Doyle made the most putts for par with 39, and Risner was right behind him with 38.
"Every player contributed to our solid play this week," continued Hill. "Garrett certainly played very steady. Pedro's 70 in the first round was a good start and then Juan's 68 in the final round when conditions were somewhat difficult was huge. It's hard to win golf tournaments and a lot has to happen just exactly right for that to happen. We still have a great deal we need to improve upon, but I'm thrilled with how we've played in the month of October."
UP NEXT
"Next up is our final event of the fall at UNCG," added Hill. "We'll get back to work on Tuesday, tweak a few things, and prepare for another stern test of golf at Grandover."
The Spartans are hosting the Grandover Collegiate on Oct. 23-24 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
