Phoenix Tied for Ninth After Day One at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Elon University men's golf team is tied for ninth following the opening round of the 2021 Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The 12-team field is playing at the par-71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8 course.

As a team, the Phoenix shot a combined 21-over par 305 and is even with DePaul in the team standings. Belmont is atop the table with a 296 (+12), while Longwood and George Washington are tied for second at 298 (+14). Elon is the only CAA school competing in the tournament.

"Ultimately in golf, you shoot what you shoot but that doesn't tell the whole story," head coach Don Hill said. "We did some nice things at various points in the round. We need to play the par 5's better and clean up some mistakes around the greens. We've left it in good spots but then put undue pressure on ourselves by chipping it by the hole playing aggressively. We need to hit a few more greens and put pressure on the golf course. I expect we'll come out tomorrow with some extra determination and toughness. We're not out of this tournament and with a good round tomorrow we'll be in position going in to Sunday."

HIGHLIGHTS
Pedro Rabadan was the top finisher for the maroon and gold, carding a 3-over 74 to tie for 13th through the first 18 holes. William Frodigh, Max Ferrari and Josef Dransfeld all shot a 77 (+6) to tie for 32nd, and Graham Hutchinson was stroke behind them and tied for 42nd with a 78 (+7). Cristian Del Vecchio rounded out the team's scores with an 80 (+9) to tied for 55th. Frodigh tallied a team-best three birdies on the day, while Dransfeld and Rabadan both made 14 putts for par.
