SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – The Elon University men's golf team finished fifth on the final day of the 2021 CAA Men's Golf Championship Tuesday, April 27 at the Cotton Dike Course at Dataw Island.
The Phoenix posted a six-over par 294 in the final round to end up with a 17-over 881. Charleston won the team title with a 30-under 834 while Drexel was the team runner-up with a seven-under 857. James Madison rounded out the top three at 870 (+6), and William & Mary finished just ahead of Elon in fourth place with an 878 (+14). Delaware came in sixth at 893 (+29), Towson placed seventh with a 906 (+42), and Hofstra wrapped up the team scores with a 989 (+125). CofC's Zach Reuland was the individual medalist as the freshman finished 13-under par with a 203. Teammate Logan Sowell and Drexel's Angelo Giantsopoulos tied for second with scores of eight-under 208.
"I don't know if I have the right words to describe the 2020-21 season," said head coach
Don Hill. "The guys have been so diligent in how they've prepared on and off the course and their commitment gave us a chance to compete. From day one we've treated every tournament as a blessing and each round as an opportunity. Along the way this group gained valuable experience that will help our program moving forward."
HIGHLIGHTS
William Frodigh and
Pedro Rabadan were Elon's top finishers as they tied for 17th with a 222 (+6).
Max Ferrari was one stroke behind them and tied for 19th at 223 (+7).
Cristian Del Vecchio recorded his best round of the tournament and led the Phoenix on the day with a one-under 71. With five birdies in the final round, including three through the first four holes, the junior from Oyster Bay, N.Y. ended up 24th with a 54-hole total of 227 (+11).
Josef Dransfeld carded an even 72 as he tied for 25th with a 228 (+12).
Frodigh's 2.92 stroke average was tied for third in par-3 scoring. Del Vecchio led the Phoenix in par-4 scoring with a 4.13 stroke average, and Ferrari had Elon's top mark in par-5 scoring with a 4.67 average. The Framingham, Mass. native made a team-best 11 birdies, followed by Frodigh and Del Vecchio with 10 each. Rabadan and Dransfeld both tallied 35 pars.
"We have a great deal of excitement moving forward and our future is bright," added Hill. "Our practices will be ultra-competitive and from that competition we should have the opportunity to compete at a high level every week. But for now our attention will be solely on academics and continuing our tradition of earning a 3.0 team GPA."
