Volleyball Ready for CAA Tournament Quarterfinal Against Northeastern

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University volleyball team begins its postseason on Thursday at the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, as the No. 5 seeded Phoenix will face No. 4 seed Northeastern in the quarterfinals.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • Towson is hosting the tournament from Nov. 17-19 at SECU Arena. The top eight teams in the CAA regular season standings qualified for the event. 
  • At 10-6, Elon finished in a three-way tie for third in the regular season CAA standings with Delaware and Northeastern. The Phoenix is the No. 5 seed in the tournament. 
  • The winner of the Elon vs. Northeastern quarterfinal will face the winner of Towson vs. Stony Brook in the semifinals on Friday. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon split a pair of matches against Stony Brook on Nov. 12-13 to conclude its regular season. The Phoenix won in straight sets on Nov. 12 to extend its CAA winning streak to six before falling in five sets in its Senior Day match on Nov. 13.
  • Leah Daniel registered 21 kills on Nov. 13 to tie her season high. It was the fourth time this season she reached 20 kills and the 17th time in her career. She hit .340 for the match, marking the eighth time this season she has finished with a hitting percentage of .300 or better.  
  • Haylie Clark surpassed 30 assists in both matches against the Seawolves, as the senior averaged 8.5 per set. She also tallied nine digs in both matches and hit a career-best five aces on Nov. 13. 
  • Jordan Gower racked up 26 digs on Nov. 12, the most digs she has ever posted in a three-set match. 
  • Senior Jenn Krzeminski tallied a team-high five blocks to go along with six kills on Nov. 13. It was the seventh time this season she has posted at least five kills and blocks in the same match. 
  • Sydney Love delivered 11 kills on Nov. 13, marking the 12th time she has registered double-digit kills this season. 
  • Ericka Link posted double-digit assists for the sixth time this season on Nov. 13, as the junior finished with 11. 
  • The loss on Nov. 13 snapped Elon's six-match CAA winning streak, the longest for the team since it joined the conference in 2014.
PHOENIX FACTS
  • Elon finished the season with a 10-6 CAA record, marking the second straight season the team has finished above .500 in conference play. This is the first time Elon has finished with a winning CAA record in consecutive seasons since joining the league. 
  • Leah Daniel's 364 kills are the third most in the conference. Elon's all-time leader in kills has reached double-digits 21 times this season, including in each of the last eight matches. She has hit over .300 in four of the last five contests. 
  • Haylie Clark is third in the conference with 864 assists and fifth in assists per set with 8.23. The senior has tallied double-digit assists in 79 consecutive matches, including every match this season, and has reached 30 assists on 18 occasions. The Saint Cloud, Fla., native also has 12 double-doubles and has delivered at least five kills in eight of the last 10 matches. 
  • With 4.57 digs per set, Jordan Gower leads Elon's back row and ranks first in the conference in the category. The senior has at least 10 digs in all but one appearance this season and has reached 20 digs seven times. 
  • Jenn Krzeminski ranks No. 7 in the CAA in total blocks (92) and No. 8 in blocks per set (0.98). The senior's .273 hitting percentage also leads the team among players with at least 100 attacks.  
  • Sydney Love is second on the team in kills with 250, as the sophomore has double-digits in 12 matches this season. Love's 0.83 blocks per set are also third best on the team and the highest average for any outside hitter in the CAA.  
  • Freshman Clara LaRue is averaging 2.33 kills in CAA matches and is third on the team in kills per set across all matches with 2.06.  
  • Alex VanWestrienen leads the Phoenix with 31 aces. The senior has multiple aces in eight matches this season and has hit a team-best 23 aces in CAA play. 
  • Claire Richey has started each of the last eight matches and has posted at least four blocks in six of them. The senior is averaging 0.86 blocks per set in conference matches. 
  • Freshman Sydney Daniels has reached double-digit digs in two of the last three contests and has had at least 10 assists five times this season. 
  • As a team, Elon is second in the CAA in digs per set (15.16) and third in blocks per set (2.15). 
ELON IN THE CAA TOURNAMENT
  • Elon advanced to its first ever CAA championship match last season. As the tournament's No. 2 seed, the Phoenix defeated Hofstra in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Towson in five sets in the championship. 
  • This will be Elon's fourth time participating in the CAA Tournament. This is the first time the Phoenix has qualified for the event in consecutive seasons. 
  • Elon is 2-3 all-time in the event and has won a match in each of its last two appearances. 
  • The maroon and gold is 1-1 all-time in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. The team lost to James Madison in 2017 and defeated Northeastern in 2019 for its first ever victory at the event. 
THE MATCHUP
  • Northeastern leads the all-time series against Elon 11-5. 
  • The Huskies won both matchups between the teams this season in Boston on Oct. 1 and 2. 
  • Elon outlasted Northeastern in five sets in the quarterfinals of the 2019 CAA Tournament, the only postseason meeting between the teams. The teams were the same seeds as they are in this year's tournament.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
  • Northeastern swept William & Mary in its final CAA series to finish the season with a 13-12 overall record and a 10-6 conference mark. 
  • Erica Staunton's 4.02 kills per set are the third most in the CAA. She recorded double-digit kills 22 times this season. 
  • With 9.93 assists per set this season, Jessica Frannea ranks No. 2 in the conference in the category. The sophomore reached at least 50 assists in four matches this season. 
  • Kayla Martin is fourth in the CAA with 4.06 digs per set this season. 
  • Naliah Jenkins leads Northeastern with and ranks No. 9 in the CAA with 0.93 blocks per set. 
  • Frannea (35), Martin (31) and Rafaella Lepenioti (31) are the only CAA trio with more than 30 aces. 
  • As a team, the Huskies lead the CAA in aces (177) and are third in the CAA in hitting percentage (.216). 
  • The Huskies are coached by Lenika Vazquez, who is in her third year at the helm.
