Men's Tennis Set For Road Trip To William & Mary On Sunday

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men's tennis returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 6, when it travels to Williamsburg, Va. for a 1 p.m. matchup with William & Mary.
 
GAMEDAY COVERAGE
- Sunday's action will begin with doubles play at 1 p.m. at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

THE MATCHUP
- Sunday afternoon marks the 13th meeting between Elon and William & Mary.
- The Phoenix currently trails in the all-time series 7-5.
- In the most recent meeting between the two programs, William & Mary defeated Elon, 4-3, on May 1, 2021.
- Elon's most recent victory against the Tribe came earlier last season, as the Phoenix took down William & Mary 5-2 on March 7, 2021.
- The Phoenix has never defeated the Tribe on its home court in Williamsburg, Va.

SCOUTING ELON
- Elon enters this contest with an 0-3 overall record after falling to Liberty in its most recent outing.
- In singles play, the Phoenix is currently led by Chung-Han Tsai and Daniel Martin, who each has one victory so far this season. Martin is 1-0 in the No. 5 position, while Tsai is 1-0 in the No. 6 spot.
- The combination of Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos has started the year off strong for Elon, posting a perfect 2-0 mark as a duo. The tandem is 2-0 in the No. 3 doubles slot after earning wins against Duke and Liberty.
- Elon returned three All-CAA honorees this season in Kyle Frankel (1st Team; 2nd Team Doubles), Camilo Ponce (2nd Team; 2nd Team Doubles) and Chung-Han Tsai (2nd Team Doubles).
- Frankel is coming off a strong season last year, as he compiled a 15-1 overall record and an 11-1 mark in the No. 1 spot. He also combined with Camilo Ponce to post an undefeated 8-0 record in doubles play.
- Camilo Ponce rounded out last season ranked second on the team in singles wins (12), while posting an 8-3 mark in the No. 3 position.
- Nicholas Campbell finished the 2020-21 campaign with the third most singles victories on the team (10), adding an 8-4 mark in doubles action.
- Chung-Han Tsai enters this season after finishing 8-7 in singles play and 10-5 in doubles action in 2020-21.
- Nicholas Condos ended the 2020-21 campaign with an 8-9 singles record and an 11-7 mark in doubles play.
- Elon is led by Michael Leonard, who will begin his 18th season at the helm of the program in 2021-22.
 
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
- The Tribe (1-3) is looking to extend its winning streak to two after defeating Longwood 7-0 in its most recent outing.
- William & Mary is led by head coach Jeff Kader, who is in his seventh year with the program after taking over in 2015. Kader has led the team to four winning seasons in his seven years.
- George Davis is leading the charge for William & Mary on the court, posting a 1-3 record in the No. 1 singles position this season. George picked up his first win of 2022 in his most recent outing against Longwood.
- In doubles play, the combination of Joseph Brailovsky and Chen Ruo leads the Tribe with a 2-1 record in the No. 2 slot.
- In 2021, the Tribe finished the year ranked No. 59 nationally, its best national ranking since 2007.
 
LAST TIME OUT
- Elon dropped a hard-fought decision against Liberty, 4-3, on Friday, Feb. 4.
- The combination of Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos clinched the doubles point for Elon, outlasting Goncalo Ferreira and Josh Wilson 7-6 to move to 2-0 this season. Condos and Campbell are now 5-1 as a duo since the beginning of last season.
- The tandem of Chung-Han Tsai and Daniel Martin got the ball rolling for the Phoenix in doubles play, taking down Deji Thomas-Smith and Christiaan Worst 6-2 in the No. 1 position. The win marked the first of the season for the duo.
- Martin also picked up his first singles win this spring, battling back against Thando Longwe-Smit to earn a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 three-set victory. The sophomore is now 1-0 in No. 5 singles.
- Tsai logged his first singles victory of the year on No. 6 singles, defeating Zion Heaven in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
- Nicholas Campbell dropped a three-set battle in No. 2 singles, falling 6-7, 6-4, 6-7 to Rafael Silva in a third-set tiebreaker.
 
THE FACES OF 2021-22
- The Phoenix welcomes back seven returners from last year's squad in seniors Kyle Frankel, Camilo Ponce and Chung-Han Tsai, juniors Nicholas Campbell and Nicholas Condos, and sophomores Luke Queiroz and Ben Zipay.
- Elon will feature three newcomers in freshmen Esteban Penagos and Joseph Dougherty, as well as Minnesota transfer Daniel Martin.
- Penagos joins the Phoenix from Laurel Springs High School, where he earned a top-300 ITF ranking.
- Dougherty comes to Elon from North Carolina Cyber Academy where he garnered a top-200 national ranking (18s) and was considered a 4-Star Player on Tennis Recruiting.
- Martin joins Elon from the University of Minnesota where he posted an 8-8 mark in singles play last season.
 
COMING SOON
- Elon hits this road for a Sunday afternoon matchup with William & Mary on Feb. 6.
- Following that match, Elon remains on the road for a Feb. 17 contest against Longwood.
- The Phoenix will then return home for three-straight matches at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Campbell (Feb. 19), North Carolina A&T (Feb. 22) and Gardner-Webb (Feb. 26) respectively.
