Elon enters the spring with five quarterbacks taking part in spring practice. The Phoenix will look for a replacement for all-conference quarterback Davis Cheek, who graduates from Elon ranked No. 2 on most of the Phoenix's career passing stats.

"We have a talented group of student-athletes who will be competing to replace Davis this spring," Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Drew Folmar said. "As a group, we want to see them compete, continue their growth in the offense, and become leaders on the team."

Although Cheek threw every pass of the 2021 fall season, he missed the entirety of the 2020 (2021 spring) campaign due to injury. Redshirt junior Joey Baughman began that season as the starter and completed 72 percent of his passes with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Baughman went down to injury and redshirt sophomore Justin Allen took over down the stretch. He went 29-of-51 passing with a pair of touchdowns.

Graduate transfer Matthew McKay joins Elon for spring practice as well. A transfer from Montana State, McKay led the Bobcats to the FCS playoffs in the fall of 2021. Prior to his time at Montana State, he played 11 games, including four starts, over two seasons at NC State, throwing for 308 yards in a 34-6 win over East Carolina to kick off the 2019 season.

Elon also has a pair of redshirt freshmen in the quarterback room in Davis LeDoyen and Garrett Esposito. Looking ahead to the fall, Elon signed quarterback Will Lankford from Pelham, Ala.
