KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Elon University men's golf carded a five-under 279 on Sunday, April 3 to finish eighth at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate. 

"Following the round, I told the team how proud I am of them," said head coach Don Hill. "We started slowly this week and ultimately dug a hole too deep to come out with a win. But to show that kind of resiliency and toughness to fight back and play our final two rounds under par is important. And if I'm not mistaken, we had the second lowest team score today."

The Phoenix ended the tournament at three-over par with a 54-hole total of 855. The host 49ers won the Intercollegiate at 24-under 828, Ole Miss was one stroke behind Charlotte at 829 to place second, and VCU took third with a 13-under 839. Mississippi's Jackson Suber edged Charlotte's Dongjin Park by a stroke to win the individual title with an 11-under 202.

"Competitive golf ebbs and flows," continued Hill. "You never know when you're going to find that feeling or sensation that creates a magical week. When one more putt drops or you hit that one fairway that gives you fits usually. We will use this week as a stepping stone and I look forward to getting back to practice on Tuesday as we begin preparing for our next event at Wofford."
 
HIGHLIGHTS
Pedro Rabadan and Juan Callejo Ropero were the top finishers for the maroon and gold as the two Madrid, Spain natives tied for 23rd at 211 (-2). Rabadan capped off the weekend with a three-over 74 while Callejo Ropero recorded five birdies, all on the front nine, for a final round of four-under 67. William Frodigh and Garrett Risner both tied for 31st with one-over 214s. Frodigh tallied four birdies, including three on the back nine, to turn in a two-under 69 and Risner recorded an even 71. Matthew Doyle shot a one-over 72 on Sunday to tie for 53rd at 217 (+4) and Bronson Myers fired a plus-four 75 to tie for 77th with a 224 (+11).

Rabadan and Callejo Ropero both tallied 12 birdies through the three rounds and Frodigh led the Phoenix with 39 putts for par.

Elon will head to Spartanburg, S.C. on April 11-12 to play in the Wofford Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
