BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Defending champion Garrett Risner carded a season-low score of 65 in the second round of the Phoenix Invitational to tie for second in the individual standings on Monday. Elon's A Team also fired a season-low 271 in the second round to stand in second in the team competition. This is the eighth Phoenix Invitational at the par-71, 6,871-yard course at Alamance Country Club.
Elon's A Team is one stroke behind the lead after recording a 36-hole total score of 550 (-18). Western Carolina is in the lead with a 19-under par 549. Elon's B Team is in 14th place with a 580 (+12).
"Today was a tale of two different rounds. I felt we were a bit tight early and not as sharp as we needed to be but we bounced back in the afternoon with a better performance at -13 under," head coach
Don Hill said. We have to be better at finishing off rounds when have good starts. Western played well today and tomorrow should be a lot of fun. I hope we can get a good gallery lining the fairways with maroon and gold!
HIGHLIGHTS
- Garrett Risner fired a season-low score of 65 (-6) in the second round to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard to tie for second after day one. Risner birdied six holes with no bogeys and led the team in par-4 scoring (3.82) and birdies (10). The junior also made four birdies to offset three bogies in his opening round of 70.
- Matthew Doyle posted a 1-under par 70 in the opening round and followed it up with a 3-under par 68 in the second round where he made one eagle and three birdies. Doyle is tied for ninth and ranks second on the team in par-4 scoring with a 3.91 average and was one of three Elon players to card an eagle on day one.
- Juan Callejo Ropero carded a team-high six birdies in the second round to shoot a 1-under par 70, which moved him into a tie for ninth. The junior made an eagle on the par-5 17th hole in the opening round where he shot a 3-under par 68. He leads the field in par-3 scoring average (2.75) and is tied for a team-best par-5 scoring average (4.33) with Risner.
- Landon Durham paced Elon's B Team on day one. The sophomore shot an even-par 70 in the second round, highlighted by an eagle on hole six, to move him into a tie for 19th place. Durham leads the Phoenix in pars with 27.
- Bronson Myers shot rounds of 73 and 68 to sit in a tie for 27th place. The redshirt junior had five birdies in the second round to offset two bogeys, moving him up 17 spots on the individual leaderboard.
- Jennings Glenn and Jack Wieler both posted a 36-hole total of 143 (+1). Wieler had seven birdies on the day while Glenn had six.
- Senior Pedro Rabadan shot an opening round of 75 followed by a second round 76 to put him in a tie for 73rd place. He finished the day with seven birdies and 17 pars.
- Rounds of 76 and 75 put Timmy Gannon in a tie for 79th place. Gannon tied for second on the team in both par-3 scoring (3.00) and pars (26).
- After an opening round 82, Oliver Rotermund battled back in the second with a 1-over par 72 that included 13 pars. The sophomore is tied for 88th in the individual standings.
UP NEXT
Play resumes with the third and final round tomorrow morning, as Elon will look to defend its team title from last season. Teams will tee off from the first and 10th holes at 8:30 a.m.
