Phoenix Defends Phoenix Invitational Title, Risner And Callejo Finish In Top Five

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University men's golf team defended its team title at the Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday, tying its lowest ever score at the event. This was the eighth annual Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club, a par-71, 6,867-yard Donald Ross design.

Elon's A Team carded a 13-under par 271 in the final round to win by 10 strokes over Western Carolina. All five members of Elon's A Team finished in the top-20 of the 95-person field – Garrett Risner (3), Juan Callejo Ropero (T4), Matthew Doyle (T6), Jack Wieler (T19) and Bronson Myers (T19). Elon's B Team came in 12th place with an 11-over par 863.

"This week was the epitome of a team win. Our entire starting lineup finished top-20 individually with Juan, Matt and Garrett all finishing inside the top-6," said head coach Don Hill. I felt Jack and Bronson gave us a good boost early and we played nearly flawless golf over our final 12 holes today. Anytime you can "throw out" a 69 (-2) in the final round you have to believe you'll have a chance to hold the trophy at the end of the tournament. We'll enjoy tonight and tomorrow and get back to work on Thursday in preparation for UNCG."
