SAPPHIRE, N.C. – After the first two rounds of the JT Poston Invitational, the Elon University men's golf team is in solo ninth place. Western Carolina is hosting the tournament at the par-71, 7,007-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Drexel is atop the team standings after posting a 11-under par 557. High Point is in second place with an 8-under par 560.
Jack Wieler was Elon's top individual and sits inside the top-10 of the individual standings.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Jack Wieler made his first eagle of the day on the par-4 12th hole in his opening round, followed by a second-round eagle on the par-5 14th hole. The freshman carded season-low rounds of 68 and 69 to sit in a tie for eighth place. Wieler leads the team in eagles (2), pars (26) and par-4 scoring average (4.00).
- Juan Callejo Ropero fired an opening round 71 that included four birdies. The junior is tied for 33rd after a second-round 72. He leads the team in par-3 scoring average (2.75) and is tied with Wieler for a team-best 4.33 par-5 scoring average.
- Garrett Risner cut nine strokes off his opening round score to shoot a 68 in the second round and move 44 spots up on the individual leaderboard. The junior had four birdies and just one bogey in the second round to sit in a tied for 45th.
- Matthew Doyle carded rounds of 74 and 71 on Monday and is tied for 45th. Doyle made three birdies in the second round to offset three bogeys and is second on the team in birdies with seven.
- Jennings Glenn is in a tie for 71st after posting rounds of 76 and 72. He is second on the team in par-5 scoring (4.50).
- As an individual, Oliver Rotermund also shot rounds of 72 and 76 on day one to sit in a tie for 71st. He finished the day with five birdies and 21 pars.
- After an opening round of 78, Landon Durham shaved off four strokes in the second round to card a 3-over par 74 and tie for 92nd.
- As a team, Elon shares the lead in par-5 scoring average (4.57). The Phoenix is also second in the field in par-3 scoring (3.00) and tied for second in eagles with two, both from Wieler.
