SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Junior Juan Callejo Ropero finished tied for third on the individual leaderboard as Elon University men's golf team placed second at the JT Poston Invitational on Tuesday. Western Carolina hosted the tournament at the 7,007-yard, par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Elon carded an 8-under par 276 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 845 (-7). Drexel won the event with a total score of 839 (-13).
"I'm incredibly proud of our fight and toughness today," said head coach Don Hill. "Our first round put us behind the right ball, but the boys dug in and fought back. Next up is the Williams Cup which we be a great test and a big stage for Elon Golf."
HIGHLIGHTS
- Juan Callejo Ropero carded his season-low round of 64 in the final round to tie for third with a 6-under par 207. The junior made an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and five birdies with no bogeys to make the biggest jump of the team on the individual leaderboard, moving up 30 spots. Callejo led the team in par-5 scoring (4.22), birdies (14) and tied for the lead in the field with a 2.75 par-3 scoring average. This is Callejo's second consecutive top-10 finish so far this season.
- Jack Wieler shot an even-par 71 in the final round to place tied for sixth. He finished the event with a team-high two eagles and led the team in par-4 scoring with at 4.03.
- Matthew Doyle delivered his best score of the tournament in the final round with a 2-under par 69. The junior finished tied for 30th carding a 1-over par 214 and was second on the team in birdies with 11.
- Garrett Risner finished tied for 42nd place, posting a 4-over par 217. He led the team with 39 pars and was tied for second on the team in par-3 scoring (3.00).
- Competing as an individual, Landon Durham tied his career-low score in the final round, shooting a 3-under par 68 on Tuesday. The sophomore carded an eagle on the par-4 eighth hole and four birdies to offset three bogeys. Durham moved up 28 spots on the individual leaderboard and tied for 64th place with a 7-over par 220.
- Jennings Glenn carded two birdies on the back-nine in the final round to finish in a tie for 76th place with a 9-over par 222.
- As an individual, Oliver Rotermund carded one birdie and 12 pars to post a 75 in the final round. The sophomore finished the tournament tied for 83rd at 10-over par.
- As a team, Elon led the field in eagles (4), par-5 scoring average (4.51) and tied for a field-best 174 pars.

Elon travels to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the Williams Cup hosted by UNC Chapel Hill on Oct. 9-10.
