No. 9 Elon WBB Takes On No. 8 Campbell In Round Two Of CAA Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Elon University women's basketball team (11-12, 7-11) looks to advance to the quarterfinal of the 2024 CAA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Primis as the team plays No. 8 Campbell (15-14, 9-9) in the second round of the CAA Tournament. The Phoenix will square off in the first of the four Thursday games to be played at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C. The two teams met twice earlier this season with Elon taking the first matchup 45-44 in Buies Creek, N.C. before the Lady Camels won 53-35 in Schar Center.

SERIES HISTORY VS. NO. 8 CAMPBELL
  • Campbell holds a 20-13 edge over the Phoenix in the all-time series.
  • In the team's first meeting this season Iycez Adams led the team with 10 points and Vanessa Taylor led on the glass with 8 boards to seal a 45-44 Elon victory.
  • In the second meeting on Feb. 4, 2024, Campbell defeated the Phoenix 53-35 with Adams leading in scoring with 13 points and eight rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon split in the final CAA regular season weekend defeating Hofstra 74-62 before falling to Drexel 56-43.
  • A 20-point performance from Iycez Adams prevailed Elon over Hofstra.
  • Adams went 9-for-10 from the field while grabbing four rebounds in just 17 minutes.
  • On the glass, Ajia James paced the Phoenix with eight boards. All but one Elon player recorded a rebound Thursday night.
  • Regina Walton secured a career-high with 11 points off the bench. Walton caught fire from behind the arc in the second quarter, nailing three straight triples in quick succession.
  • The 74 points are the second most at Schar Center this season. The Phoenix is now 7-1 this season when scoring 65 points or more.
  • The field goal percentage against Hofstra is the highest in Schar Center history for the Phoenix and the highest at home since Elon shot 56 percent against College of Charleston in 2018.
  • Elon's 69.2 percent field goal percentage in the first quarter was the best since the Phoenix shot 75 percent in the first quarter against High Point earlier this season.
  • Against the Dragons, Adams led Elon for the 11th time this season with 13 points going 6-for-12 from the field.
  • Jessica Booth and Pass led the team in rebounds with four followed by Maya Johnson with three.
  • Overall, the Phoenix outnumbered Drexel in steals (11-8), points in the paint (24-20) and blocks (4-2).
  • The Phoenix recorded its 24th double-digit offensive rebounding performance of the season against Drexel Saturday afternoon.
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
  • Last weekend the Lady Camels went 1-1 in league play falling to Charleston 60-57 before defeating Hampton 70-61.
  • Campbell now sits with a 16-13 record overall and finished 9-9 in CAA play to finish as the eighth seed.
  • Last season, the team posted a 16-15 overall record while going 10-8 in Big South play.
  • As the CAA newcomer, Campbell was picked to finish tenth in the league.
  • Christabel Ezumah and Shy Tuelle were named to the 2023-24 CAA Preseason Honorable Mention team.
  • Ezumah, a senior forward, currently leads the team at 12.6 points per game. She also paces the CAA in rebounds per game (8.1) and third in the league in blocks per game (1.7).
  • Tuelle is averaging 10.1 points per game and 3.3 boards per game. She leads the CAA in three-point field goal percentage at 38.8 percent.
  • Sophomore guard Gemma Núñez leads the team in assists (98) and steals (38). Her 3.4 assists per game ranks tied for seventh in the league.
  • As a team, Campbell is second in the conference in team field goal percentage at 42.7 percent and team three-point field goal percentage at 33.4 percent.
  • Ronny Fisher is in his eighth season at the helm of the Campbell program. Prior to the program's switch to the CAA, Fisher was at the time the longest-tenured Big South coach with 14 seasons under his belt and led all active coaches in the conference with 232 total and 146 Big South wins. Fisher led the 2019-20 and 2021-22 teams to Big South regular season titles and finished runner-up at the Big South Tournament in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
