LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Elon men's tennis team took home three singles victories and two doubles victories on day one of the Liberty Dual Friday. The day served as the opening day of the fall season for the Phoenix as well as Head Coach Maciek Sykut's debut for the maroon and gold.
Freshman
Charles Pilet made his collegiate career debut during the day, securing victories in both singles and doubles. Pilet staved off three match points in the second set of his singles match to gut out a huge victory for the Phoenix.
The team fought for two doubles wins with
Veljko Krstic and
Jack Curtis earning a 6-2 win against Penn players Sanjeev Chundu and Tal Goodman.
Oskar Antinheimo and Pilet also picked up a doubles win by a score of 6-1 against Stephan Gershfeld and Matthew Rutter of Penn.
All three of Elon's singles wins came in gritty three-set victories. Krstic rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win over Chundu, while
Juan Sengariz beat Penn's Justin Chung 6-3, 4-6, 10-3. As mentioned earlier, Pilet pushed past Gershfeld 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 10-5.
