Elon Ready For Campbell Road Swing

ELON – The Elon University volleyball team hits the road this week, traveling to intrastate foe Campbell for a pair of Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matches on Friday and Saturday at Gore Arena inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
 
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
Friday, Oct. 31 – at Campbell at 6 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 1 – at Campbell at 3 p.m.
 
FOLLOW THE PHOENIX  
SERIES HISTORY (Campbell leads 13-5)
  • Campbell holds a 13-5 advantage in the all-time series dating to 1997. Elon has been more competitive in recent years, going 5-3 against the Camels since 2008.
  • This weekend marks only the second series between the programs as CAA opponents. Last season, the teams split their inaugural league meetings at Elon; Campbell won the opener in five sets before the Phoenix responded with a straight-sets victory in the finale.
  • Cameron Lanier tied for the team lead with 23 total kills (2.88 per set) across the two matches. Catherine Rucker added 13 kills, while Casey Brower served a team-high six aces.
  • Elon will be seeking its first-ever win at Campbell, as the Phoenix is 0-5 all-time on the Camels' home floor. The teams last met in Buies Creek in 2014, with Campbell earning a four-set victory.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Elon hosted Piedmont Triad rival North Carolina A&T last weekend in its most recent CAA series. The Phoenix pushed the Aggies to five sets in Friday's opener before N.C. A&T swept the finale.
  • Over the weekend, Elon totaled 98 kills and hit .221 while averaging 12.25 kills per set. Simrin Carlsen paced the offense with 3.25 kills per set and posted double-doubles in both matches, adding 3.38 digs per set.
  • Clara Simmons was second on the team with 23 kills (2.88 per set) and added a double-double Friday with 17 kills and 13 digs. Rucker contributed 18 kills in the series, highlighted by a career-high 11 in the opener.
 
ELON AT A GLANCE
  • Elon sits at 3-7 in CAA play, part of a three-way tie one match behind Stony Brook (4-6) for the sixth and final CAA Tournament spot. Towson leads the league at 11-1, followed by Hofstra and Campbell at 8-2, Charleston at 9-3, and N.C. A&T at 7-3.
  • The Phoenix is hitting .171 as a team, averaging 11.3 kills and 10.6 assists per set, while opponents are hitting .238.
  • Simmons leads the team with 187 total kills (2.67 per set) and 206 points (2.94 per set), recording 41 kills over her last three matches. Carlsen ranks second with 169 kills (2.35 per set) and 195 points while also standing 10th in the CAA in digs (3.23 per set). She has nine double-doubles this season.
  • Rucker is seventh in the CAA in service aces per set (0.36) and among the league's top 10 in hitting percentage (.280). April Rice ranks 10th in assists per set (5.38).
  • Now in its 54th season of competition and 27th at the Division I level, Elon returned 10 letterwinners from last season, including three starters. The Phoenix also welcomed five newcomers in 2025, four freshmen and one transfer.
  • Lanier earned 2025 Preseason All-CAA laurels with teammates Rucker and Caroline Berlekamp also getting preseason league recognition.
  • Elon returned 61% of its kills, 25% of its assists, 35% of its digs and 62% of its points scored from 2024.
 
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
  • Campbell enters the weekend 16-5 overall and 8-2 in league play after sweeping a pair of matches at Stony Brook last weekend. The Camels have won six straight and are 5-2 at home this fall.
  • Campbell ranks second in the CAA in hitting percentage (.255) and first in service aces per set (2.10), while averaging 13.3 kills per set.
  • Senior Gwen Wolkow leads the team with 3.30 kills per set and 292 total points. Freshman Maja Daca follows with 3.07 kills per set and 42 service aces — the most in the CAA. Setter Hannah Pattie directs the offense with 469 assists (6.09 per set).
  • Greg Goral is in his 13th season of leading the Camels volleyball program.
 
WELCOME COACH TROY
  • Elon head coach Matt Troy is in his first season with the Phoenix after six years leading Johns Hopkins, where he compiled a 151-17 record and captured the 2019 NCAA Division III national championship.
  • Troy has a career record of 357-96 (.788) over 14 seasons at the Division III level, including a 66-match winning streak from 2019-21. He ranks among the top 10 all-time and active coaches in Division III history by win percentage.
 
ALL-AMERICAN NEW FACE
  • Among the new faces for the Phoenix this season includes graduate student transfer Simrin Carlsen, an outside hitter from Edison, N.J. Carlsen arrives to the Phoenix after competing at Johns Hopkins from 2021-24, recording over 1,000 career kills under former Blue Jay and now current Elon coach Matt Troy.
  • Carlsen posted a decorated career at Johns Hopkins, as she was a two-time AVCA All-American, earning First Team laurels in 2023 and Second Team accolades in 2024. She was also a two-time AVCA First Team All-Region V (2023, 2024).
  • She was named Baltimore Regional Most Outstanding Player in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and earned Centennial Conference Player of the Year that same season.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
  • Elon is in its eighth season playing at Schar Center, which seats 5,100 and serves as home to the Phoenix men's and women's basketball teams.
  • Elon will host two more matches this season at the facility with admission being free for all fans.
 
UP NEXT
  • Elon will host its final two home matches of the regular season Nov. 8-9 against UNCW. The Phoenix will recognize its senior class at the home finale on Nov. 9.
