Elon Hits Road To Face Marshall

Phoenix Takes 2-0 Start To West Virginia For Midweek Tilt

ELON – The Elon men's basketball team will trek north for a midweek tilt against Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia. Tipoff at the Cam Henderson Center is slated for 7 p.m. ET Wednesday with the contest being televised on ESPN+.

GAME INFORMATION
INSIDE THE MATCHUP – ELON vs. MARSHALL
  • Series record: Elon leads, 1-0
  • Elon defeated Marshall 73-59 last season on Dec. 28, 2024, in the first matchup between the two programs. Phoenix assistant coach Ryan Saunders led Elon to the victory, as head coach Billy Taylor missed the game due to illness.
  • Former Phoenix Matthew Van Komen will suit up for Marshall on Wednesday night after transferring away from Elon this past offseason. Van Komen – who is averaging 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for the Thundering Herd – started 32 games for the Phoenix last season and posted season averages of 6.0 PPG and 7.9 RPG.

STARTING FIVE
1. Two Games, Two Wins
Elon is off to its first 2-0 start of the Billy Taylor era (2022-present) and its first overall since opening 3-0 in 2020-21. The Phoenix started last week with a dominant 99-51 win over Belmont Abbey, placing six players in double figures and controlling the game on both ends. That was followed with a gritty 92-90 victory at UNCG on Saturday that saw Kacper Klaczek force overtime with a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation. Elon leads the CAA with 95.5 points per game, and its 191 total points are its most through the first two games of a season since the 2016-17 campaign (196 against William Peace and Charlotte).

2. Protect The Rock
The Phoenix has been exceptionally clean with the basketball through its first two outings, posting just 5.0 turnovers per game to rank third nationally. Elon also sits fifth in NCAA Division I in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.5, underscoring the team's collective selflessness and decision making. That ball security has translated to a +10.0 turnover margin – the 10th best number in the country – through Monday.

3. Big Boosts
Graduate forwards Chandler Cuthrell and Kacper Klaczek have delivered major production through the season's opening week. The pair powered Elon's overtime win at UNCG with a combined 45 points and 23 rebounds, highlighted by Klaczek's 25-point, 13-rebound effort and Cuthrell's 20-point, 10-board performance. Their dual 20-point, 10-rebound lines marked the first by an Elon tandem in the same game since Tyler Seibring and Dmitri Thompson accomplished the feat on Feb. 23, 2017. Through two games, Cuthrell is averaging 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, while Klaczek is posting 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game – including 5.0 offensive rebounds, a figure that ranks 15th nationally.

4. Let It Fly
Elon has opened the season with strong perimeter volume and efficiency, averaging 12 made 3-pointers per game after hitting 13 against Belmont Abbey and 12 at UNCG. Junior guard Randall Pettus II leads the early surge, connecting on 6-of-11 (54.5%) from deep, including four triples in his Phoenix debut. Eight different players have already recorded at least one make from long range, with Kacper Klaczek (5-of-9, 55.6%) and Ned Hull (3-of-6, 50.0%) joining Pettus above the 50-percent mark.

5. The Rookie & The Vet
Elon's point guard duties have primarily run through graduate guard Ja'Juan Carr and freshman DeMarco Johnson, who have combined for an efficient 18-to-3 assist-to-turnover ratio through two games. Carr – who helped guide UNC Pembroke to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament berths from 2023-25 – posted seven assists without a turnover in the overtime win at UNCG and carries a 9-to-2 ratio overall. Johnson set the tone in the opener with a team-high six assists against Belmont Abbey and added a 3-to-0 line at UNCG, reinforcing the backcourt's early ball-security profile.

UP NEXT
Elon is back at home to host Gardner-Webb on Saturday night. The contest will tip off at 8 p.m. ET and is the backend of a Phoenix basketball doubleheader, as the Elon women's team will host Howard at 5 p.m. ET earlier that afternoon.
