Phoenix Hosts Paladins In Midweek Tilt

Elon Plays Second Of Three Straight Games Against SoCon Foes

ELON – The Elon men's basketball team continues its homestand Wednesday night when it welcomes former Southern Conference counterpart Furman to the Schar Center. The Phoenix (4-3) and Paladins (4-4) tip off at 7 p.m. ET, with the nonconference matchup streaming on FloCollege.

GAME INFORMATION
INSIDE THE MATCHUP – ELON vs. FURMAN
  • Series record: Elon leads, 11-7
  • Elon and Furman were Southern Conference foes from 2003-14.
  • Elon won 11 of 15 meetings with Furman during its 11 seasons in the SoCon, but the Paladins have taken the past three matchups (2017-19), all in nonconference play and under current head coach Bob Richey.
  • Furman split a pair of games at the ESPN Events Invitational in Kissimmee, Florida, last week, topping Richmond 73-72 before falling 72-65 to Illinois State. The Paladins have lost their only true road game of the season at Northern Iowa, 70-54, on Nov. 14.

STARTING FIVE
1. Cuthrell's Hot Start
Graduate forward Chandler Cuthrell has been one of the nation's most productive two-way performers, averaging 22.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His scoring average leads the CAA and stands seventh nationally, and he's shooting 52% from the floor. Cuthrell also leads the CAA and ranks 18th nationally with 48 free throws made (48 of 66, 72.7%) while posting three double-doubles, each in 20-plus point outings. The Phoenix forward is one of only two Division I players averaging at least 22.9 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.4 APG and 1.3 SPG, joining Duke's Cameron Boozer.

2. When It Rains…
Elon is one of the CAA's most prolific perimeter shooting teams, ranking first in the league in 3-pointers made per game (11.1) – also 23rd nationally – and 3-point attempts per game (30.3), while sitting second in 3-point percentage (36.8%). The Phoenix opened the season with five straight games of 10-plus threes, added eight in their 35-point win at Appalachian State on Nov. 24 and hit nine against Mercer last Saturday. All eight Phoenix who have made a 3-pointer this season have at least four, led by Randall Pettus II, who is shooting 46% from deep (23 of 50) with multiple makes in all seven games. Pettus leads the conference in both 3-point percentage and 3-point makes per game (3.29). Though early, Elon's 11.1 threes per game would set the program's Division I record; only three Phoenix teams in the Division I era (1999-present) have averaged double figures from beyond the arc.

3. Crash Course
Elon also ranks among the CAA's most active rebounding teams, placing fifth in the league in rebounding (39.4 RPG), fourth in rebound margin (+5.1) and second in offensive boards (14.29). The Phoenix is converting those extra opportunities into 14.9 second-chance points per game. Two Phoenix stand among the CAA's best in rebounding: Cuthrell (8.0 RPG, 6th) and Kacper Klaczek (6.4 RPG, 10th).

4. Calling For Backup
Sophomore Bryson Cokley has emerged as a valuable scoring spark off the bench and continues to round out his game as the season progresses. A transfer from George Mason – and originally a Wake Forest commit out of high school – Cokley ranks third on the team in scoring (12.7 PPG) while averaging 23.7 minutes in a reserve role. He's reached double figures in six of seven games, including each of the last three. The 6-foot-6 guard has also elevated his work on the glass, collecting 20 rebounds over the past three games after totaling 10 in the first four.

5. Southern Conference Swing
Furman is the third of four Southern Conference opponents on Elon's schedule this season. The Phoenix opened the stretch with a 92-90 overtime win at UNCG on Nov. 8 and most recently fell 91-84 to Mercer last Saturday. Elon, a SoCon member for 11 seasons (2003–14), will close the run with a trip to Wofford on Saturday.

UP NEXT
Elon treks to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to face Wofford on Saturday. Tipoff at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is at 4 p.m. ET.
