Phoenix Looks To Snap Skid, Earn Third Road Win Of Season

ELON – The Elon men's basketball team travels to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to face Wofford in a nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium is at 4 p.m. ET and the matchup will be televised on ESPN+.

The Phoenix (4-4) will look to snap a two-game skid as it takes on a third straight foe from the Southern Conference in Wofford.

GAME INFORMATION
INSIDE THE MATCHUP – ELON vs. WOFFORD
  • Series record: Elon leads, 31-21
  • Former SoCon counterparts Elon and Wofford (6-3) will go head-to-head for the 53rd time Saturday afternoon.
  • The Phoenix won 79-56 in the most recent matchup between the teams last December at the Schar Center in Elon. The programs had not clashed since 2014 – Elon's last season as a SoCon member – prior to last season's contest.
  • Elon went 8-9 against Wofford as a member of the SoCon between Jan. 31, 2004, and Feb. 27, 2014.
  • The Terriers have won two straight games and five of six dating back to Nov. 15, most recently topping Eastern Kentucky (83-77) on the road last Saturday and Presbyterian (63-56) at home on Wednesday.

STARTING FIVE
1. All Aboard The Cuthrell Train
Graduate forward Chandler Cuthrell has been one of the nation's most productive two-way performers, averaging 23.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His scoring average leads the CAA and stands fourth nationally, and he's shooting 52.6% from the floor. Cuthrell also leads the CAA and ranks 15th nationally with 55 free throws made (55 of 75, 73.3%) while posting three double-doubles, each in 20-plus point outings. The Phoenix forward is one of only two Division I players averaging at least 23.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.4 APG and 1.3 SPG, joining Duke's Cameron Boozer.

2. When It Rains…
Elon is one of the CAA's most prolific perimeter shooting teams, ranking first in the league in 3-pointers made per game (11.1) – also 18th nationally – and 3-point attempts per game (30.8), while sitting second in 3-point percentage (36.2%). The Phoenix opened the season with five straight games of 10-plus threes and had 11 against Furman on Wednesday. All eight Phoenix who have made a 3-pointer this season have at least four, led by Randall Pettus II, who is shooting 47.5% from deep (28 of 59) with multiple makes in all eight games. Pettus leads the conference in both 3-point percentage and 3-point makes per game (3.50). Though early, Elon's 11.1 threes per game would set the program's Division I record; only three Phoenix teams in the Division I era (1999-present) have averaged double figures from beyond the arc.

3. Crash Course
Elon also ranks among the CAA's most active rebounding teams, placing fourth in the league in rebounding (39.3 RPG), fourth in rebound margin (+4.1) and second in offensive boards (14.25). The Phoenix is converting those extra opportunities into 14.9 second-chance points per game. Two Phoenix stand among the CAA's best in rebounding: Cuthrell (7.9 RPG, 6th) and Kacper Klaczek (5.9 RPG, 13th).

4. Calling For Backup
Sophomore Bryson Cokley has emerged as a valuable scoring spark off the bench and continues to round out his game as the season progresses. A transfer from George Mason – and originally a Wake Forest commit out of high school – Cokley ranks third on the team in scoring (12.5 PPG) while averaging 23.9 minutes in a reserve role. He's reached double figures in seven of eight games, including each of the last four. The 6-foot-6 guard has also elevated his work on the glass, collecting 25 rebounds over the past four games after totaling 10 in the first four.

5. Southern Conference Swing
Wofford is the fourth and final Southern Conference opponent on Elon's schedule this season. The Phoenix earned a 92-90 overtime win at UNCG on Nov. 8 in the second game of the season, but has been defeated by both Mercer (91-84, Nov. 29) and Furman (97-88, Dec. 3) in the past week. Elon was a member of the SoCon for 11 seasons (2003–14).

UP NEXT
Elon returns to Schar Center to host Northern Illinois next Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. ET.
