Men’s Tennis Travels to Tennessee for First Road Matches of the Season

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team (0-1) is headed to Tennessee for the first road matches of the spring. The Phoenix will take on No. 19 Tennessee Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn., before their campaign against Penn in a neutral site match Sunday. This marks the first of four straight road matches for the Phoenix.

THE MATCHUP
  • This will be the third time Elon has competed against Tennessee, with the last contest occurring in 2015. 
  • Sunday's match against Penn will mark the first contest between the teams. 

ELON VS. THE SEC
  • Elon holds a record of 0-3 against schools in the SEC. 
  • Against the SEC, the Phoenix have competed against Georgia and Tennessee.
  • The most recent match against an SEC school was in 2019 where Elon fell 4-0 in a neutral site match against Georgia during the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. 

ELON VS. THE IVY LEAGUE
  • The Phoenix currently holds a 5-5 record against schools in the Ivy League. 
  • Elon's most recent match against an Ivy League school was in 2023 where the Phoenix clinched a 4-3 win against Dartmouth. 

SCOUTING TENNESSEE
  • Tennessee is currently 5-2 on the season.
  • In Tennessee's most recent campaign, a home match against No. 16 Michigan State, the Volunteers won 4-3, securing the doubles point and winning three singles matches. 

SCOUTING PENN
  • This weekend's matches will mark the first away matches of the season for the Quakers.
  • Penn currently holds a 5-0 season record, with their most recent win occurring against Saint Joseph's. 

ABOUT THE PHOENIX
  • Elon enters the season coming off a 16-8 campaign last spring and its third consecutive appearance in the CAA championships. 
  • Juan Sengariz is Elon's lone senior for the season, returning to the Phoenix after fighting for a 16-6 singles record and a 10-9 doubles record in the 2024 spring season. 
  • Also returning for the Phoenix are juniors Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic as well as sophomores Jack Curtis and Alonso Roca
  • Oskar Antinheimo returns for Elon after taking home the title of Team MVP in 2024. Antinheimo also earned a spot on the 2024 All-CAA Second Team in singles.
  • Veljko Krstic returns for the 2025 spring season having made both the All-CAA First Team for singles and the All-CAA Third Team for doubles last season. 
  • Sophomore Jack Curtis enters the season following a 16-6 singles record and a 17-7 doubles record during his freshman year. 
  • Roca joined the Phoenix as a freshman, making four appearances in the spring season, during which he went undefeated in doubles matches. 
  • Elon welcomes three newcomers this season, all freshmen – Charles Pilet, Luke Forester, and Rafael Ymer. Pilet joined the Phoenix in August, competing in numerous tournaments throughout the fall season. Forester and Ymer both join the Phoenix for the start of the spring season. 
  • Elon is led by head coach Maciek Sykut, who is in his first season as a head coach. 

FRESH NEW FACES
  • Elon welcomes three freshmen this season – Charles Pilet, Rafael Ymer, and Luke Forester.
  • Pilet competed in several events throughout the fall season, securing wins in both singles and doubles matches. Pilet joins the Phoenix after being recognized as the runner-up at the 2024 U18 French National Championships. 
  • Forester spent the 2023-24 season at Biola University but did not compete. 
  • Ymer and Forester both joined the Phoenix in January. 
  • In the first event of the season, Ymer secured the first singles win of the season against Nicolo Consonni of VCU scoring 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. 
 
COACH SYKUT
  • Maciek Sykut joins the Phoenix for what will mark his first season as a Head Coach.
  • Sykut joins Elon from Duke where he served as an assistant coach for two years before being elevated to associate head coach in 2022. 
  • While at Duke, Sykut helped lead the Blue Devils to 22 wins, marking the first 20-win campaign in the program since the 2014-15 season. 
  • Sykut was also named 2022-23 ITA Assistant Coach of the Year.
