STARTING FIVE
1. Maroon Travels
Elon has been a tough out away from home this season, posting a 6-7 road mark, including a 3-4 record in CAA play. The Phoenix's three conference road wins came at Triad rival North Carolina A&T (Jan. 8), at Hofstra (Jan. 17) – the Pride's first home loss of the season and just one of two overall – and most recently at William & Mary (Feb. 14). The improvement represents a notable turnaround for the program, which dropped 24 consecutive nonconference road games from Dec. 22, 2018, to Nov. 15, 2024, and did not win more than three road games in a season during a five-year stretch from 2019-24.
2. The Home Stretch
The Phoenix enters the week tied for ninth place at 6-9 in the CAA standings with three games remaining in the regular season. After opening league play with a 4-2 mark through six contests, Elon has hit a skid and will look to make a late push for improved CAA Championship seeding. The Phoenix faces a pair of teams directly in the mix this week – Towson (6-9, T-9th) and Monmouth (8-7, 6th).
3. Leading Role
At the center of Elon's offense is graduate forward
Chandler Cuthrell, who has emerged as one of the nation's most productive scorers at 20.3 points per game (28th nationally). After arriving at Elon this past offseason with a career scoring average of 6.1 PPG, Cuthrell has broken out with 20-plus points in 16 games, including a career-high 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting with 10 rebounds in the Phoenix's double-overtime loss at Hampton on Feb. 5. The 6-foot-8 forward ranks third in the CAA in field-goal percentage at 50.3% and has generated significant offense at the free-throw line, going 158-of-226 (.699). His free throws made and attempted totals rank 18th and seventh nationally, respectively.
4. Cookin' With Cokley
Sophomore guard
Bryson Cokley served as the catalyst Elon's last road game – an 81-78 win at William & Mary on Feb. 14 – scoring a career-high 29 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with just seconds remaining. He followed that with a 19-point effort in a loss to North Carolina A&T last Saturday, giving him 20 double-figure scoring performances this season. Cokley, who has started the past eight games after coming off the bench in the first 20, is averaging 12.8 PPG while shooting 40.3% (56 of 139) from beyond the arc.
5. Floor General
Elon has found stability at the point guard position in graduate
Ja'Juan Carr, who helped UNC Pembroke win 74 games over three seasons (2022-25). Carr leads the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) and ranks 21st nationally with a 3.18 assist-to-turnover ratio. He has been even sharper in league play, posting a 3.7 ratio with 70 assists to just 19 turnovers. The Burgaw, North Carolina, native's 124 assists already rank seventh in Elon's Division I single-season history. He sits 20 shy of cracking the program's top 10 with at least four games remaining. More than just a facilitator, Carr has scored in double figures five times in conference action, highlighted by a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting in Elon's rally past Campbell on Jan. 10.
UP NEXT
Elon concludes the regular season by hosting UNCW on Tuesday, March 3. Tipoff at Schar Center is at 7 p.m. ET.
