ELON, NC – Mariam McLeod poured in 17 points and hauled in 10 rebounds as Elon defeated Longwood 73-58 Wednesday night at Alumni Gym.
McLeod’s outputs in both scoring and rebounding were both game-highs and season-highs. Her 10 caroms equaled her career high from two seasons ago.
The Phoenix (1-3) and the Lancers (1-3) played to eight early ties before Longwood took a 26-22 lead with 5:45 to play in the first half on consecutive buckets by Kanee’ Booth and Angel Johnson. Paced by three field goals by Holly Andrews, Elon closed out the stanza with an 11-1 surge to claim a 33-27 halftime advantage.
A 17-10 run to open the final period put the Phoenix up 50-37 with 12:25 remaining in the contest. Elon claimed its largest lead at 73-55 on an Andrews jumper with 1:46 left.
In addition to McLeod, the Phoenix received key performances from Andrews (11 points), Anestha Blakeney (11 points), Courtney Nyborg (career-high 10 points, eight rebounds) and Jayme Chikos (game-high and season-high 10 assists, eight points).
Longwood was paced by Tokisha Burton (15 points, eight rebounds), Leigh Farmer (13 points), Ebony Smith (11 points, eight rebounds) and Booth (10 points).
Elon out-did the Lancers in field goal percentage (53.2-35.3), rebounds (42-38), assists (18-9), blocked shots (3-1) and steals (9-7). Both teams coughed up 19 turnovers apiece.
