Tar Heels Cruise Past Phoenix

CHAPEL HILL, NC -- Jessica Williams netted a career-high 16 points, but it was not enough as the North Carolina Tar Heels (7-1) downed Elon (2-4) 83-50 Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium.

The 13th-ranked Heels took advantage of their size and speed to dominate on the boards, outrebounding the Phoenix 56-22, and force 31 turnovers.

La'Tangela Atkinson led UNC with 16 points and 10 boards while Candace Sutton (10 points, 10 rebounds) also notched a double-double. Nikita Bell (12 points) and Coretta Brown (10 points) also finished in double digits in scoring. Bell also recorded six of UNC's 17 steals.

Williams, whose 16 points came on five threes and a free throw in the second half, was the only Elon player to score in double figures. Anestha Blakeney, Ivey Ghee and Lisa Miller each scored eight points. Ghee led the Phoenix with five rebounds and Courtney Nyborg blocked a season-high four shots.

On the night, Elon shot 34.6 percent to UNC's 46.4 from the floor. Carolina turned the ball over 26 times.

The Phoenix will travel to Raleigh on Wednesday night for another ACC battle, taking on North Carolina State at Reynolds Colisseum at 7:00 p.m.
