ELON, N.C. -- Elon University senior guard Holly Andrews (Hudson, N.C.) saw her Elon basketball career come to an end after suffering an ACL tear. The injury initially occurred during Elon's January 17 game against Davidson. Andrews attempted a comeback on February 7 after missing five full games, but reinjured her right knee.
Andrews (pictured right) was leading the Southern Conference in scoring, averaging 18.9 points per contest and will finish her career in a Phoenix uniform as Elon's fourth-leading scorer all-time with 1,403 points. The two-time Southern Conference Player of the Month was also averaging 2.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season while shooting 37.9 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. Prior to her injury, she was rated 23rd in the nation in scoring, averaging 19.9 points per contest and was a contender to become the Southern Conference Player of the Year which could have made her a two-time league player of the year.
This season she established new career highs in points scored with 35 in a victory over Appalachian State and minutes played with 40 at North Carolina A&T. The 35 points against Appalachian State came in Elon's first-ever Southern Conference victory and that ranks as the third-best individual performance in Elon women's basketball history. She also owns the number four slot in that individual scoring list, netting 34 points in a win over UNC Greensboro. She also twice tied the single-game record for free throw percentage, connecting on 11-of-11 attempts against both Appalachian State and UNC Greensboro. Of Andrews, Head Coach Brenda Paul says, "Holly is the most talented, pure scorer that I have had the privilege to coach in 26 years. Her unique and aggressive style is both entertaining and effective. She possesses a balanced attack that is tough to defend. She has a deadly three-point shot, can beat you off the dribble and has the ability to involve her teammates with the assist. Holly is a tough competitor and a clutch player when the pressure is on. She will go down in history as one of the finest players to ever wear an Elon uniform. On a personal note, Holly's upbeat and easy-going personality makes her a winner on the court and in life."
